Last Sunday, the Street Fine Art festival was held in Gwanghwamun Square hosted by Korean Fine Arts Association. Gwanghwamun Square is a public area in front of Gwanghwamun and located in the heart of central Seoul that features museums, statues, restaurants, and beautiful surrounding views. I joined in the festival as a member of Korea Outdoor Watercolor Artists' group, and sketched the well-known landmarks, buildings and colorful panoramic sceneries about the bustling streets. There was an air of festivity throughout the Gwanghwamun Square. It was also a memorable day for me by sketching the various monumental buildings and landmarks standing on the very center in the heart of Seoul.

meetup once again at Gwanghwamun Square

"The Art of URBAN SKETCHING" by Gabriel Campanario was translated into Korean language by Hong Seung Won and published by EJONG Art Professional. Much thanks to them! It is on sale in bookstores.  Mr. Huh, staff of Kyobo Book Center, asked us an interview to introduce all about the urban sketching to the readers. We promised to meet at 11:00 am on Jan 30th, 2013 in front of the King Sejong statue at the Gwanghwamun Square near the Kyobo Book Center, Gwanghwamun.  We'll show how the urban sketching is going on the spot. Anybody can join us. Hope to see you there!

two sketches in/out on a bitterly cold day

charcoal, A 4
After swimming I walked down to Gwanghwamun to buy some art material at Namdaemun market. On the way at Naejadong, I saw this scene. I couldn't pass over and in the middle point returned to the pedestrian road for sketching across this street. It was so cold that my fingers got numbed. But the shiny light was there contrasted by the vertical dark lines of the Integrated Govermental Building in back.

pen, charcoal, A 4
I had lunch at the Melodies, large scale food court of Kyobo Book Center. After having deliciously I sketched the bustling scene inside of the kitchen. I planned how to capture them while having Gimbab(rice wrapped with black laver within which kinds of vegetable were put in the center) with hot soybean sauce soup.

sketches around Gwangwhamun

at street of Kukidong

national flag at Sajigdong

blue building at Sajigdong

shoe-shiner at Gwangwhamun
pencil, pen, chalks, A 4 sketchbook

The blue building which I drew using watercolor before looks very nice to me. This time I used chalks. And I began the bottom one when the shoeshiner was away. While drawing it he came back so I added him. He didn't feel bad about sketching him while some  didn't permit to draw the scene. Before I finished this he went away carrying the shined shoes to the owners. How he worked merrily smiling, I felt glad too.

13 x 19 cm sketchbook
It was raining all day. I walked from Sajik Park to Gwangwhamun sketching the above ones. A pretty pot of flower imported rose moss caught my eye. While sketching the owner of the flower shop came out to see. Because I'd lived over 30 years in that village not far from the shop we talked about redevelopment, the old bakery, old doctor whom I had frequented for curing of my kids and I heard that he died after moving out the village. National flags hung on the building for celebrating the Independence Day of Korea were touching; the colors looked vivid due to the rain.

At the end of sketchcrawl on June 12, 2011 climbing the Inwang Mountain I arrived at Gwanghwamoon and finished the tour drawing the statue of the general.
