scroll painting of Gaeamsa exhibited at the National Museum of Korea

scroll painting of Gaeamsa(temple located at Buan, Jeonla Bukdo), which is exhibited at the National Museum of Korea, Yongsan-gu, Seoul

A 4

Two days ago I visited the National Museum of Korea. In winter season I go often there to appreciate lots of national treasures and special exhibition. I could see the above scroll painting with 1,317 cm height and 868 cm width. Though it looked very hard to imitate I tried to do on A 4 paper. It's one of national treasure, no. 1269. Color was brilliant in spite of that it was produced on 1749. Because such kind of scroll paintings were so big to hang inside the temple it was used for the praying outside the temple building. For the height of the painting it was hung in the open space through two floors. It looked so statios that I stayed for long in front of the painting.

In the year-end holydays, I visited the Jeong-dong Observatory (정동 전망대)on the 13th floor of Seoul City Hall Seosomun Annex Building (서소문 청사), just across the street from Deoksugung Palace(덕수궁). The Observatory itself is rather modest in appearance: just a few chairs, coffee and refreshments and a photographic display of historical landmarks on the walls. The real attraction is outside: the panoramic views spanning from Seoul City Hall to the Ganghwamun Area and beyond, including Inwangsan and Bukhansan, moreover, Namsan mountain. The panoramic views of numerous buildings also reflect the history of Seoul. Many visitors enjoyed the beautiful landscapes and various forms of architecture at Deoksugung Palace and neighboring areas around Seoul City Hall.
I sketched the various compositions from the fantastic panoramas through the window, moving here and there all around the building.
.

small space in the Ara Artcenter, Insa-dong, Seoul

brush pen, watercolor, A 4

I visited the ARA ARTCENTER located at Insa-dong, Seoul two days ago to see an exhibit of Kim Joon-kwon. It was impressive by lots of print works(180 pieces) and his oil painting(20 pieces). I spent several hours to appreciate and copy some of his works. But the small space seen through large pane glassof the hall caught my eye too. I drew one using brush pen and watercolor. The exhibit will end tomorrow.

sketch at the Seoul Metropolitan Library

pen and watercolor, 19.5 x 22 cm

Days ago I visited the former Seoul city hall which was remodeled as a library two years ago (Oct. 2012). The authoritative appearance of the former city hall seemed familiar by books and reading people. I'd like to visit there often for sketching or reading too. It's great pleasure for citizen to have such a nice space.

Seoul Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌 한옥마을) has been a traditional residential district for more than 600 years of the history of Seoul. This village is the city's last neighborhood with a high concentration of traditional residences, called Hanok (Korean house). Today, many of these Hanoks reform and operate as cultural centers, galleries, guest houses, restaurants, and tea house, providing an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse in Korean traditional culture. Nevertheless, this historic village is well preserved by Seoul Metropolitan Policy, and lots of traditional Hanoks and new buildings coexist side by side harmoniously.
A few days ago, I enjoyed walking along the interesting street of Bukchon Village and sketching the colorful buidings and streetscapes.
.

pencil sketches

By Yoo Byung-hwa in Seoul, Korea

hair dresser in beauty shop, 6B pencil, 18.5 x 25 cm

model and participant in figure drawing class,
6B pencil, A 4

electrical work changing high-tension wire at my village,
6B pencil, watercolor, A 4

Pencil drawing is basic and easy to start, so I like to use it above all. I feel short in exact description, which may make me feel safe and free with pencil. Eraser is a safety pin for me. While sketching the bottom one a taskmaster addressed me showing interest in drawing. He said that his dream was an artist when young. Drawing and sharing seems to go together.
