one sketch at Gongdeok-Dong, Mapo-Ku, Seoul

pen, soft pastels, A 4
It was terribly windy. I had to get on a bus at Gongdeok-Dong across the Mapo Police Station.  Before walking across the road I saw the vine wrapped the street tree to the sky. The traffic light, street light pole, and electric pole created a scene worthwhile to be drawn. Because I didn't keep the mat I borrowed some paper box to sit in the very shop where I sat under the window. After finishing I got on a bus. The skyline of Mapo-ku looked so different a lot from the shapes of 10 years ago that I felt as if I were in a foreign land.

sisters arranging flower at church, Seoul

pencil, A 4
Years ago when I visited a church I could see sisters who were busy with arranging flower at an altar. They didn't have noticed that I was sketching them. I sketched several ones successively. The gesture of picking, cutting, and setting the beautiful flower in vase was so calm and touching. I was lucky to catch the scenes. Though I feel some guilty to post these ones without permission.....

HS Song and I took a photo after sketching the new city hall.

We had a joyful sketching though the weather was not fine, somewhat windy and cold. Even at the same place we could see the different sides of the subjects and try the various mediums, which brings the valuable results unexpectedly. Thank you for the sketching together and delicious sandwich prepared by HS Song!

Seodaemun Prison History Hall from archive

pencil & watercolor
I sketched this one while I was caring my mother in law at the Seran Hospiral located across the Independence Park next to the Seodaemun Prison History Hall on 2001. The scenery was beautiful with colored leaves. It would be same as before if I could see through the windows of the hospital.

Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine is one of the famous historical sites remaining in Korea. It's located on the banks of theHan River on the east side of the Yanghwa Ferry Point crossing, the top of a small cliff rises high. The construction of the Shrine began on 1966, the 100th anniversary of the Pyong-in Persecution, and was completed in 1967. 103 Saints were canonized on 1984.
A few days ago, I visited the Shrine and drew some sketches with a reverential attitude.

candles of the prayers at Jeoldu Martyr's Shrine, Habjeongdong, Seoul

32 x 24 cm, pen & watercolor

feature of the church looked upward from the passage, A 4, charcoal

So many candles were lit by the prayers beside the Saint Maria. The Jeoldu Martyr's Shrine was originated by the intense persecution on 1866. The martyrs died at the place for the belief. The church building was constructed on 1967. 103 Saints were canonized on 1984. Now many descendent believers go on a pilgrimage to remember the saints' martyrdom. . It became a season of entrance exam for university. Many of the flaming candles might be for the examinees, I guessed.

The Gaemi Maeul(Ant Village) is famous for the beautiful village located on the hillside of Mt.Inwang. What is more, this village is favorably situated in downtown Seoul, so it's possible to sketch frequently for us. The weather was so fine, we could be enthusiastic over sketching all day with a rural atmosphere.
