street scene at Jeongreung-ro, Seongbuk-ku, Seoul

pencil, watercolor, 25 x 25 cm

I always have interest in overpass highways. The volume, color, contrast, geometric shape, dynamic features with vehicle on and under caught my eye every time I passed. To some may it look like a monter but I thank for the monstrous existence. I sketched at the entrance gate of Bongugsa(temple) in the late afternoon of November 15, 2012. I felt like that the water on paper seemed to be frozen and melted. To that degree was it cold.

Sogang university was established in 1960 by the Society of Jesus to provide an education based on Catholic belief and inspired by the Jesuit educational philosophy, in conformity with the Korean
tradition of education.
The campus located at the foot of Nogosan Mountain, and lies close to Sinchon Subway Station in downtown Seoul. A few famous modern architecture and numbers of contemporary buildings are mixed together felicitously, and they are in harmony with nature and the surroundings around campus.
I sketched strolling in the elegant campus, and enjoying beautiful fall leaves pleasantly.

on a rainy day at Angug-dong & Nagwon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul

I had some business at Jongno tax office. When I came out, it was raining. I had no umbrella but a small foldable field chair. Passing Yulgog-ro I found an alcove at Hana bank, Angug-dong branch, where I could sketch the opposite without getting wet.  The yellow leaves looked more vivid on a rainy day.

pen, pastels, 26 x 37 cm

I went to Nagwon musical instrument shopping center, Nagwon-dong for sketching inside,  But the outside scenery was more attractive by raining. As soon as I sat on the 2nd step deck which leaded to Tapgol Park, I saw a woman carrying lunch plate to be delivered to the shop keepers on her head. The shopping mall is the biggest one in nation. On rainy, windy, or bitterly cold days it's very recommendable to go there.

Main gate seen from the Myeongjeongjeon

The palace, Changgyeonggung, locates at Yeji-dong, Changgyeonggung-ro across Seoul National University Hospital. I went there on last Friday in the afternoon. Years had passed since I'd visited. People walked along the wall of the palace under the colored big trees. Cars were running fast on the street. But inside the palace it was very quiet. While sketching I could see a pretty couple in Korean traditional attirement taking photos before wedding. Near to sunset the palace showed another kind of beauty with dark shade and streaks of light which was different from one with full sunlight. I met one guy with a big camera, who was a painter. I introduced him about Urban Sketchers blogs and Sketchcrawl events too.

Drawing with App.

It's really fun to draw with drawing application. Whenever and wherever I go I am with my smart phone, Galaxy Note 2 and draw. Here are some of them.

Streetlights near Gangnam Station

Streetlights near Gangnam subway station was beautiful.  The sun was setting, light scant.  The long, dusk sun made the streetlights resemble seagulls in procession.  It also reminded me of the highways in LA.  The drawing came out a bit darker than I'd hoped, but next time, I hope I can experiment with different pencils.
