Last Saturday, for the 62nd World Wide SketchCrawl, we Seoul urban sketchers met at Seoul Folk Flea Market (서울풍물시장), Sinseol-dong (신설동), Dongdaemun-gu. The market is well known as the largest flea market in Korea, and all the street around market were crowded with customers and vendors all the year round. There are lots of sketching subject matters such as various kinds of regional specialties, antiques, craftworks, pottery, variegated necessaries of life, rare objects and many others.
It was very cold and windy outdoors, but inside the market building was so warm by many heaters and vibrant atmosphere for enjoying sketch pleasantly. I've visited here to sketch many times before, so all the colorful scenes were not stranger to me. I tried to sketch the familiar scenes in and out of the interesting flea market with a new perspective. It's a certainly useful experience to repeat sketching on the same spot many times.

Sketches at the Seoul Folk Flea Market

I began with this scene of pairs of socks, shoes, men's jackets hung on the column.

I asked this man who was selling and repairing bags whether I could draw him(Yang Jo-Wook) using his stool. He permitted with a smile. And he told me that he was an oriental painter and showed me his figure paintings which were great. We kept talking about his life for painting till I finished this one. It was meaningful time and rare.

Contrabass and accordions
While I was drawing this one a woman began to sound with a accordion next to me. I stopped this one and tried to sketch her. After finishing her playing I added colors to this one again.

Accordion player, Kang Eun-Ja, kept playing while I was drawing her. Those pieces were so good to hear and the passengers stopped to see her play and to see my work too. All of us might not forget the happy time we shared together. I thanked her too.

People can buy every kinds of paintings. Oriental, western, big and small...

pen, pastels, A 4
I tried to go out to capture the street sellers and customers. Big scale stone sculptures were stood in rows. And it was so crowded as much as inside.

We had the first meetup this year at the Seoul Folk Flea Market. It was a usual cold day of January. But inside temperature was good enough for sketching. Merchants told they refurbished the ceiling for better environment. It was good to see the market develop day by day. The food court space was divided by transparent doors from the selling zone And the covered ceiling kept the indoor temperature warmer. We could feel the distinguished features clearly for we visited after one year for sketching. We thank for the participants despite of cold weather and hope to meet again soon.

The Seoul Folk Flea Market is the largest flea market in Korea. It is a place alive with typical Korean folk items, souvenirs, traditional food, everyday goods and many others. Those are very interesting subject matters for sketchers.
It was a little cold and rainy yesterday, so we usk Seoul members sketched together enjoying the various kinds of interesting things inside the market building during the day. I often visited to sketch the marketplace many times, so I drew some new scenes which I didn't before in and outside the crowded market.

Sketches at Seoul Folk Flea Market (서울 풍물 시장)

pen, brush pen, watercolor, 27.5 x 39.5 cm

Weather was fine though cold in the morning but it changed. Near the noon it began to rain till we ended the sketching. So most of us couldn't go out for sketching. The market was always busy with visitors and antique lovers. Drawing old goods was funny and the shop owners helped us providing chairs or showing interest in our blog. One owner asked me to give the blog address for visiting. I thought that the sellers seemed to be generous to customers selling old goods. Today we greeted four new comers. Hope them to join us as often as possible.

Though the weather was not warm, our outings were great. At Seoul station Rian, Susan's friend, joined us too. In spite of her busy working weekdays she was so eager to sketch Seoul, which inspired us so much. She enjoyed Korean food too. We had Korean traditional pancakes even at Gwangjang market, so crowded one. Much thanks for all her generous understanding about Korean culture and people. Hope her to come again soon and to be able to sketch all together!

Thank you so much, Susan, for your pretty presents and drawing too!

Recently Bh Yoo and I met Susan Robertson from Vancouver, Canada. We sketched at some well-known sites in downtown Seoul from Jan. 9 to 17 on weekends.
She seemed to be fascinated by colorful attractions in Seoul. We had a pleasant sketch time despite the cold weather.
.
