Last Saturday, for the 65th World Wide SketchCrawl event, Seoul sketches gathered to sketch on the Ogansugyo Bridge around the DDP(Dongdaemun Design Plaza).
It was a pleasant but rather chilly day. Although only a few members participated, the sketching subjects were always diverse and rich, so it was a good atmosphere for sketching. DDP is famous for its huge architecture as a new tourist attraction in downtown Seoul. Since I have often sketched here, all the scenes are familiar, but the colorful architecture of various scales and vibrant streets are always renew my mind.
I drew various commercial buildings around Cheonggyecheon in the morning. And after lunch, I sketched new scenes with the huge landmark DDP of Dongdaemun.
The area around Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, which contains the history of Seoul's life culture, is an excellent place to provide vivid scenes to Seoul sketches all the time. My posting is late because I traveled abroad right after this sketching event.

two sketches of DDP and the surroundings

I have been skeching the DDP(Dongdaemun Design Plaza) building for years. DDP is located at Eulji-ro, Jung-gu, which is huge and unique landmark in Dongdaemun History & Culture Park. Yesterday, usk Seoul members had sketch meeting along the Cheonggyecheon Stream that runs to Dongdaemun Gate. The weather was so hot and humid, I sketched DDP building and surroundings looking down at the top of the 13th floor inside of DOOTA building across the road. So I could see more elements at the same scene that I sketched before. I worked one piece in watercolors and another in 4B pencil having a different feeling. Thanks to all the participants in the hot weather.

Few days ago, I visited the old-fashioned Gwangjang Market locate in Jongno-gu, the central district of downtown Seoul. Gwangjang Market has over 110 years of history. The market is one of Korea's largest traditional market and continues to thrive as a popular tourist destination today. Moreover the market has long been famous for many non-stop shopping and exotic eating areas draw thousands of visitors to the market everyday. It was a cold weather, but the market streets were crowded with people ceaselessly.
I sketched some colorful scenes in and outside the bustling Gwangjang Market and the
surroundings in an exciting atmospheres.

sketches in acrylics at Cheonggyecheon and Jongno, Seoul

scenery with Mojeongyo (bridge), acrylics, crayon, 39 x 27 cm

street scenery at Sambong-ro, Jongno
acrylics, crayon, 39 x 27 cm

Today, the end of Lunar new year holidays, I went to downtown for sketching for the weather forecast said it would be warm. But doing something near the cold water was not easy at all. The fabric which I used for water-absorbing was frozen. It might be caused by my location in shade. Passengers asked "Aren't your fingers cold?" I replied "Absolutely freezing!" But expecting that the spring will come soon I enjoyed the outdoor sketching.
After finishing the first one I moved to Burger King, Jongno district office branch to warm myself and sketch one more indoor. The place was excellent with my favorite views which I repeatedly kept drawing. This time I used acrylics and crayons. In both works changing light mattered as always, which compose the most attractive scenery in pictures.

Last weekend, during the Chuseok (추석), Korean Thanksgiving holidays, I visited Cheonggyecheon and sketched the colorful sceneries walking along the stream for two days. The Cheonggyecheon is a stream running through central Seoul from west to east. There are 22 bridges that cross the stream and every bridge has its own historic name and unique form. Until it was restored in 2005, Cheonggyecheon Stream existed only as a neglected waterway hidden by an overpass. Nowadays, it has been transformed into a haven of natural beauty amidst the bustle of city life.
The weather was so fine all through the Chuseok holidays, I enjoyed sketching several cityscapes from Cheonggye Plaza (청계광장) to Pyeonghwa Fashion Town (평화패션타운) near Dongdaemun Gate.
.

It was a fine day with some breezing. Six sketchers met at the Cheonggyecheon. We greeted each other. As always the long stream was crowded with visitors from inland and overseas. The place may be one of the greatest sketching spots by water, people and high-risen buildings in back ground. We had lunch at chinese restaurant and moved to Jogyesa located at downtown nearby. Sharing and enjoying all the works was on 3:30 pm. YH Lee and I walked Insa street visiting Insa Art Center appreciating some art works and Nagwon Musical instrument arcade and Unhyeongung together. We had supper at Korean dimsum restaurant and watched Eric's producing event video of Chinese Lantern Festival which will be held in New Zealand. We hoped his events to be successful too.
Thanks all the participants : Mona Kwon, Eric Ngan, Chung Hae-kwon, Andy Oh, Lee Yong-hwan, Yoo Byung-hwa.

Yesterday, Sept. 28, YH Lee and I visited Cheonggyecheon for more sketching.

Jeon Tae-il statue at Cheonggyecheon bridge, pencil, watercolor, 25 x 25 cm

Walking along the streal to the East gate we sketched scenes. What impressed me was the statue of Jeon Tae-il who burnt himself to death for the laborers' rights. Cheonggyecheon holds endless stories of workers, industries, and devolopment of Korea. His statue made me think about them. Two days' sketching at Cheonggyecheon was not enough to capture all. We should keep for better and more. Thanks!
