12월의 메세나폴리스

Mecenapolis, pen and watercolor (280x216mm)

Hapjung Station side view, pen and watercolor (280x216mm)

Yesterday, the weather was so fine to sketch under the autumn sky.  We Seoul urban sketchers including a foreign new comer, Nancy Ho, met together around Deoksugung
Palace and had a good sketch time all day. Deoksugung Palace is one of the most famous attractions for Korean traditional palace with history in downtown Seoul. The palace sits alongside a series of modern style buildings that add to the uniqueness of the surrounding scenery. We sketched the colorful traditional buildings inside the palace through the morning, and after lunch we moved to Jeong-dong adjacent to the palace. There are a lot of attractive subject matters for sketching such as beautiful stonewall walkway, various church buildings, museums, modern architectural properties and the traditional festivals for many tourists and visitors. I liked such subjects and enjoyed sketching around Jeong-dong for a long time. I sketched lovely scenes in historic downtown Seoul with a peace of mind as ever.

Sketches at Jongno Tower building, Seoul

a cityscape viewed from the 20th floor, (29.6 x 42cm), pen and watercolor

a scene of Insa-dong viewed from the 20th floor, (29.6 x 42cm), pen and watercolor

a scene of Jongno Bookstore, basement 2nd floor, (29.6 x 42cm), pen and watercolor

a scene around Bosingak Pavilion viewed from the 8th floor, (21 x 29.6cm), pen

Last Saturday, it was cold weather for sketching outdoors. Besides the fine dust has covered Seoul in recent days. Seoul urban sketchers met at Jongno Tower, a landmark building in downtown Seoul, and sketched comfortably inside the modern building.
It was a weekend, so the office floors of the building were vacant and quiet to sketch without interruption. I sketched the spectacular scenes looking down through the window on the 8th and 20th floor inside the 33-story glass building. After lunch, I sketched an interior scene of the Jongno Bookstore, basement 2nd floor, and an outdoor scene in front of  the Jongno Tower.
Thanks all participants for having a pleasant sketch time!

I often go to Insa-dong (인사동) for enjoying sketch in my spare time, because there are a lot of subject matters for sketching all over the place. Last Saturday, I joined in sketch meeting with William at Ssamziegil(쌈지길) building which is one of the famous tourist attractions in Insa-dong. After sketching around Ssamziegil, we moved to McDonald's for tea. During our conversation I sketched a portrait of William and presented him in memory of sketch meeting.

a field trip to Sejong City(세종시)

Last week, I participated in a field trip program of Seoul Institute of Registered Architects(SIRA: 서울특별시 건축사회). After attending a special lecture about Sejong City, We made an on-the-spot survey of Sejong City, Multifunctional Administrative City (MAC:행정중심복합도시). The City is located on the east-north side of Chungcheongnam-do and has Chungcheongbuk-do Cheongwon-gun(청원군) to the East, Gongju-si(공주시) to the West, Daejeon(대전시) to the South, and Cheonan-si(천안시) to the North. The construction works according to the Sejong City Project have been under way for several years. Recently, the Ministry of Security and Public Administration(안전행정부) announced a total of 35 government agencies, including nine ministries from Seoul, will be relocated by 2014 when Sejong City's construction meets the initially scheduled deadline. And The plan has been going smoothly up to the present. Having a busy schedule with in a very short space of time, I have been busy sketching actively wherever I looked in.

Kookmin University(Bugak campus) is a private university located in Jeongneung-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. Surrounded by the Bukhansan National Park, Kookmin University boasts a clean and green environment complimented by the most up-to-date educational facilities. There are colorful sceneries of natural landscape harmonized with various campus building clusters.
Last Saturday, the weather was so hot and sultry that I can't help sketching with washing my face in cold water many times. In spite of high discomfort index, I was absored in drawing diverse sceneries with satisfaction.

The cafe building is four-stories high with public spaces on the first two floors and the cafe itself on the third and fourth floors, the latter of which is an indoor viewing deck affording wonderful views of the Han River, Hannamdaegyo Bridge and Namsan Mountain.
The weather was so good, and I sketched a lot of attractive sceneries around the cafe here and there excitingly. Welcome to new participants and hope to continue seeing!
