Yesterday, the weather was so fine to sketch under the autumn sky.  We Seoul urban sketchers including a foreign new comer, Nancy Ho, met together around Deoksugung
Palace and had a good sketch time all day. Deoksugung Palace is one of the most famous attractions for Korean traditional palace with history in downtown Seoul. The palace sits alongside a series of modern style buildings that add to the uniqueness of the surrounding scenery. We sketched the colorful traditional buildings inside the palace through the morning, and after lunch we moved to Jeong-dong adjacent to the palace. There are a lot of attractive subject matters for sketching such as beautiful stonewall walkway, various church buildings, museums, modern architectural properties and the traditional festivals for many tourists and visitors. I liked such subjects and enjoyed sketching around Jeong-dong for a long time. I sketched lovely scenes in historic downtown Seoul with a peace of mind as ever.

Jeongdong is one of the best places for urban sketching in downtown Seoul. There are a lot of attractive subject matters for sketching such as beautiful Deoksugung Palace(덕수궁), stonewall walkway(돌담길), various church buildings, museums, modern architectural
properties and the traditional festivals for many tourists and visitors. I liked such subjects and enjoyed sketching around Jeong-dong for a long time. Every time I sketch, it’s a new experience.
Last Saturday, usk Seoul members including many new comers met together around Deoksugung Palace and had a good sketch time. I painted a buildingscape in watercolors on the Jeongdong-gil street in the morning. After lunch, I went up to the Jeongdong Observatory (정동 전망대) on the 13th floor of Seoul City Hall Seosomun Annex Building (서소문 청사). The beautiful panoramic views of numerous buildings through the window fascinated me. I painted another buildingscape in watercolors looking down from the Observatory inside the building. It was a very pleasant sketch time to paint watercolors.

Deoksugung Palace is famous for Korean traditional palace with history in busiest downtown Seoul. The palace sits alongside a series of western style buildings that add to the uniqueness of the surrounding scenery. A fascinating mix of traditional Korean and Western-style neoclassical structures and nearby areas are very popular for visitors for the beauty and tranquility. Inside the palace, the museum building, connected with beautiful bright colored neoclassical-style Seokjojeon(석조전), was constructed in 1938. It's now the MMCA (National Museum of Modern Contemporary Art) Deoksugung, with a collection of permanent and temporary contemporary art.
Last week, a sunny spring day, I visited the museum and enjoyed the exhibition of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Korean Modern Masters, Pen Varlen(변월룡 1916~90). Pen,Russian-Korean artist, is an important figure in Soviet socialist realism art. I appreciated his impressive masterpieces and sketched in and outside the museum with picturesque surroundings.

In the year-end holydays, I visited the Jeong-dong Observatory (정동 전망대)on the 13th floor of Seoul City Hall Seosomun Annex Building (서소문 청사), just across the street from Deoksugung Palace(덕수궁). The Observatory itself is rather modest in appearance: just a few chairs, coffee and refreshments and a photographic display of historical landmarks on the walls. The real attraction is outside: the panoramic views spanning from Seoul City Hall to the Ganghwamun Area and beyond, including Inwangsan and Bukhansan, moreover, Namsan mountain. The panoramic views of numerous buildings also reflect the history of Seoul. Many visitors enjoyed the beautiful landscapes and various forms of architecture at Deoksugung Palace and neighboring areas around Seoul City Hall.
I sketched the various compositions from the fantastic panoramas through the window, moving here and there all around the building.

Florence is absorbed in sketching, pen and watercolor, 24 x 34cm

Yesterday, the weather was fine to sketch in the downtown Seoul. The new Seoul City Hall building exposed its splendid appearance between the old building and the surround buildings, and the townspeople crowded in Seoul Plaza for enjoying the holiday. KW Jung and I sketched around Deoksugung Palace and Seoul Plaza with Miss Florence half the day.
In spite of the unfamiliarity with Korean culture, Florence sketches various Korean buildings with a practiced hand. She is undoubtedly a good sketcher. Hope to see you soon!

at Deoksugung Palace from archive

25 x 25 cm, pencil & watercolor
Years ago, it was possible to use watercolor at the palace. These days it's strictly forbidden for the protection of the cultural property.

Years ago, I created this collage work with a motive of the palace and a church at Jeongdong street nearby. Though it's not a drawing made on the spot, I post this for the reference related with the scenery of the palace..
