It kept being fine and rainy repeatedly. Eight sketchers including one new comer(Yoon Jae Kyung) gathered at the National Palace Museum of Korea and the other three sketchers(JS Han, KW Baik, YK Jeong) kept sketching at Samcheong-dong.

Samcheong-dong seems to keep changing day by day. So it gives lots of fascinating spots for us. Sketching Jongno we may be the biggest earning party through often meetings.

비가 안 와도 후덥지근함으로 길을 걷기에도 힘든 날씨에 요소 요소에서 그림과 씨름하신 스케쳐 여러분들께 감사합니다. 이번 전시회를 핑계 삼아 종로를 많이 관찰하고 그려보는 귀중한 자기 발전의 시간이 되었으면 합니다.

지난  수요일   두명의 친구들과   종로 스케치를 나갔다.
조계사에서  스케치하고는  유쌤이 사주시는  맛있는  절 식사를 하고
낙원 악기상가에서    라이브음악을 들으며   스케치하는  호사를  누렸다.

For the last few days, I kept sketching various scenes in the center of Jongno to prepare for the exhibition. The colorful streetscapes around Jongno-gu office attracted my attention.
I sketched some buildings along the old streets in Jongno, downtown Seoul.
I was absorbed in midsummer sketching and cooled off from the heat with a cup of iced coffee.

주중 며칠간 점심시간을 이용해서 뜨거운 종로 한복판에 그늘과 시원한 곳을 찾아
펜대와 수채물감, 연필가루 날리며~~ 냉커피 한잔에 땀을 식히면서
새로운 소재들과 마주하며 "스케치 피서"를 즐겼습니다.

It was a muggy day, but it was more like a sketch than other days.Nagwon Mall, who was sketching and hot weather in Jogyesa, looked like heaven and earth. He had a fun time with three people in the musical instruments and music.

These are the same size sketches done during two days at Jogyesa and Nagwon (Musical) Instrument Mall. Several sketchers could meet at Jogyesa and moved to the mall. Because the weather was hot and humid some enjoyed sketching in cool mall. We visited the Topgoal Art Center on the way to the mall.

위의 연필 그림 두장은 어제 조계사에서 그렸고 오늘은 스케쳐 몇분과 조계사를 들러 낙원 상가에서 스케치를 하였습니다. 날씨가 워낙 무더워서 시원한 낙원 상가에서 악기들을 그려보았구요. 상가내의 벤치에서 음악 소리를 들으며 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다. 상가 가는 길에 절시장도 방문하였어요.

The rainy season began. Last weekend, despite the bad weather to sketch outdoors, I tried to draw new subjects I didn't sketched before around Jongno. 

During rains, I sketched some old street scenes and an indoor scene inside the Nagwon building and the Mcdonald's. And after rain, I sketched outside the Topgoal Art Center where we'll exhibit next month. I'll continue working on my sketches around Jongno in my spare times.

무더운 날씨에 여름장마까지 겹쳐 온갖 시끌버끌 북적거리는 종로이지만, 

소재를 찾아 탐구하며 그리기에는 잘 정돈된 시가지보다 참으로 매력있는 장소입니다.

그동안 도심을 수없이 그렸지만 안그린 장면을 찾아보면 볼수록 소재가 무궁무진합니다.

이번 전시회는 무심히 스쳐버리는 주변을 소중히 챙겨보는 좋은 계기가 될 것 같습니다. 

June Sketchwalk

I am a little late in posting this, but these are the two sketches I did on the last sketchwalk.

 The first sketch is of the Junghwamun Gate, inside Deoksugung Palace, one of Seoul's four royal palaces built during the Joseon dynasty (1392 - 1910). 

While I was scouting for a suitable location to sketch from, I got talking with a Japanese tourist who said there was going to be a 'parade' soon and I shouldn't leave without seeing it. The parade she was talking about was the 11am changing of guards ceremony. I could already hear the beat of the drums and the sound of marching footsteps round the corner. 

Grabbing a bench facing the Jughwamun gate, I quickly laid out my sketching gear and waited with a dip pen and a bottle of ink in hand. The Japanese tourist had her phone propped up with a selfie stick and was standing by the road, also waiting. As the beautiful procession of uniformed guards carrying colourful flags passed us by, we captured the event in our own way. You can see her in my sketch, recording the event. 

After lunch, a bunch of us headed to Seoul Anglican Cathedral whose striking architecture, a mix of traditional Korean and Romanesque features which makes it a utter pleasure to sketch. I am told that on a clear day the sun casts dramatic shadows over the cathedral walls and I must visit again to sketch/paint this wondrous play of light and shadows. Well, I cannot wait!

Hanbok Parade

Even though it was rainy day, there were so many peoples in Jongno area. Arrived at Insadong late because of heavy rain and started to draw at Cafe Wednesday. It was taken 6 hours to complete sketch so that my eyes were very tired but really happy time for me. 

늦게 일어난 토요일, 갑자기 폭우가 쏟아지는 바람에 더 늦게 인사동에 나와 카페에 자리를 잡고 그림을 그리다 보니 중간에 그만 두고 나올 수가 없어 모임 장소에 나가지를 못해 아쉽습니다. 하지만 지난 주 미완성으로 남았던 그림이 마음에 걸려 이번엔 화장실도 가지 않고 날이 저물 때까지 한 자리에 앉아 드로잉을 완성하고 보니 눈은 아주 피곤했지만 기분은 참 뿌듯하고 행복한 시간이었습니다. 

마른 장마라고 하더니 비가 오는 것도 운치 있어 나름 좋았습니다. 다음 번엔 수채를 해서 비오는 장면을 표현해 보는 것도 좋겠구나 싶었습니다. 

다음주에는 좀 더 서둘러서 그림을 시작해 보고 다른 스케쳐 분들도 만나 그림 얘기도 나누는 시간도 가질 수 있길 기대해 봅니다. 

Interim information about the coming exhibition

Hi sketchers,

As you know the exhibition period is from Aug. 10 to Aug. 25, 2017. We seem to hang as many as we can for better show because the hall is big for small sketch works. We hope you to bring more than 5 framed works at least if possible. The works which show the Jongno scenery will be good because the theme of this exhibit will include "Jongno". It will be needed for every participating sketcher to send one photo to the curator's email address for producing promotion materials till the end of this month. I will let you know on meetups or sending e mails. And we hang the works together on Aug. 9th, 2017 a day before opening. Two times' work shops will be on Aug. 14(Monday) and Aug. 23(Wed.), 1:30 pm - 3 pm at Unhyeongung.

*** Work shop schedule was changed from Aug. 16 to Aug. 14 by the request of the gallery staff. ***

전시회에 관한 중간 안내를 드리겠습니다.

작품 사진 보내기 : 2017년 7월 31일 까지 큐레이터 이메일로 보냄
작품 걸기 : 2017년 8월 9일
작품 수 : 최소한 5 점 정도

스케치하기에는 좋다고 할 수 없는 날씨라서 전시회를 앞두고 있는 스케쳐 여러분들의 마음이 무거우실거여요. 전시회 기간이 두 주일을 넘고 작은 스케치 작품들을 걸기에는 진시 공간이 넓어서 참가하시는 분들의 작품이 많으면 좋겠습니다. 최소한 5 점 이상은 가져오셔야 할 듯하구요. 기존 와이어외에도 아래 위로 거는 것이 허용되기 때문에 작품 디스플레이하는 작업은 융통성이 있을 듯합니다. 전시 타이틀에 '종로'가 들어가니 아무래도 종로의 풍경이 주가 되는 전시회입니다. 아직 스무날 정도가 남았으니 짬짬이 많은 작업하시기 바라구요.
두 차례의 워크 샵은 모두에게 중요한 행사이니만큼 시간 되시는 분들의 적극적인 협조를 부탁드립니다.
홍보물에 실릴 작품 사진 한장은 7월 말까지 큐레이터 선생님의 이메일로 보내기로 하였구요. 개인 정보이니만큼 출품하시는 분들께 직접 알려드리겠습니다. 그림 디피는 전시 전날인 8월 9일에 할 예정이며 시간은 함께 할 수 있는 시간으로 의논하여 정하도록 하겠습니다.

I visited the famous senior movie theater located at 4th floor of Nagwon (musical) Instrument Arcade for sketching. But the high office staff said "You shouldn't work here again. like this. You are permitted this time though."

오늘 비가 소강 상태라는고 하여 전시회가 열릴 서울노인복지센터에 가보았습니다. 일요일에는 휴관이라 한적한 분위기에서 조용히 건너편 풍경을 그려보았어요. 점심 후에 낙원상가 4층에 있는 실버 영화관을 가보았습니다. 그림 도구를 간단히 펼치고 그리는 중에 책임자 되시는 분이 '이번만 허락하는 것이고 다음에는 작업하시면 안된다'고 하여 일단 마무리를 하였어요. 어쨋든 그곳 사정을 따라야 하는 것이겠지요.  모처럼 옛날 극장의 분위기에 젖어 보는 시간이었습니다.
