Just wonderful workshop I at Nagwon Instrument(musical) Mall

The Nagwon mall locates near the Senior Welfare Center of Seoul. 

How much they concentrated in drawing!

It was just harmonious to see the exhibiting artist and sketchers to be sketch together.

She showed that standing is one of the most necessary attitudes for sketchers.

She visited the gallery with her mother last day and waited to join this workshop because sketching was her dream.

No more serious than this!

One guy of the guitar shop presented nice music for us.

One senior participant, Mr. Yoo Byung Chul, played his mandolin on the spot between his sketching.

The participants didn't fear coloring even. We praised their use of simple colors in  refined and characteristic manners.

She was so glad to meet me because of the same clan "Yoo". She would be my father's generation using the higher generation character 'Geun'. I held her hands as if I saw my aunt. What's interesting was that the mandolin playing man was my same generation with same character 'Byung'. So we laughed saying that we would be brother and sister. Sketching presented another pleasure through communication.

We took a photo after hanging works in this workshop at the gallery where we hung our works. We felt satisfactory at the results we've done together!

The first workshop was held at the Nagwon Musical Instrument Mall. We walked five minutes to the mall which located near the Senior Welfare Center of Seoul talking freely about sketching. They showed strong interest in sketching on the spot. One participants told that he was waiting for this workshop so much and he would join our sketching meetup next month. As you see in the photos all the participants were very sincere and excited in the fact that they tried to do sketching outdoor with artists. By the advance information nobody used photo while drawing. We enjoyed sketching together. After returning to the gallery we hung the results on the wall. How much we felt happy sharing them! We wait for the next workshop. 

날이 많이 더우면 밖으로 나가는 것이 걱정스러웠는데 다행히 어제 오늘 많이 시원했어요. 그래도 오늘 비가 오락가락해서 운현궁보다는 낙원 상가로 스케치 장소를 택했습니다. 신청하신 어르신분들과 스케치 장소로 이동하면서 짧은 시간이었지만 그림에 대한 이야기를 나누면서 갔습니다. 그림에 대한 관심이 크신 분들이어서 즐거운 대화가 이어졌어요.

낙원 악기 상가는 쉽지 않은 대상이지만 '내 생애 처음 스케치해본다'는 분들도 자리잡고 '현장에서 직접 보고 그린다'는 원칙에 한치도 어긋남없이 참으로 진지하게 그리셨습니다. 전시 작가님들도 사이 사이 스케치에 분주하셨구요. '옆에서 그리시는 작가님 한마디'에 길을 찾았다는 분도 계셨고 앞으로 모임에 나오셔서 함께 꼭 그리시겠다고 의욕을 보이시는 분들도 계셨어요. 모두가 즐거웠던 1차 워크샵이었습니다. 그분들 그림 보시러 다시 들러주시기 바랍니다.

Waiting my friends, I explained the USK's mottos to the senior docents of the gallery.

Two times' sketching meetups in September

안녕하세요! 시원한 바람이 불어와서 가을을 느낄 수 있어 좋습니다.
스케치 모임에 대한 안내 말씀을 드립니다.
이번 8월은 전시회로 많이 바쁘셔서 이번 달은 함께하는 스케치 모임은 두차례의 워크샵(8월 14일과 23일)으로 대신할까 합니다. 복지관 안과 밖을 스케치하는 기회가 되었으면 좋겠구요. 아주 추운 겨울에 하기 어려울 수도 있어서 날씨 좋은 가을에 두번 모이려고 합니다.

첫번째 : 2017년 9월 9일 - 신촌 연세대학교(Yonsei University), 학생회관(Student Union)앞에서 10:30 am 에 만나고 점심은 학생회관내 식당이나 그리시는 곳 가까운 편리한 곳에서 하시고(혹은 시켜서 드셔도 좋을듯), 4:00 pm에 학생회관 앞에서 다시 모여 그림 감상합니다. (We meet in front of Student Union in Yonsei University where you can come by Line 2, Sinchon station, exit 3 with 10 minutes walk from the station. You can find Student Union building, no. 207 in this map. We can have lunch in restaurant in that building as well as in other ones. And we'll see our works in that building on 4 pm.)

두번째 : 2017년 9월 23일 - 능동 어린이대공원(Children's Grand Park, Neung-dong), 팔각당앞(in front of Palgakdang-octagonal pavilion)에서 10:30 am 에 만남. 점심은 식물원앞이나 놀이동산등 편리한 곳에서 하시고 4:00 pm에  팔각당(Pakgakdang)에 다시 모여 그림 감상합니다. 찾기 어려우신 분은 처음부터 자유로이 스케치하시다가 4시에 팔각당으로 오시기 바랍니다. (We meet at Palgakdang-octagonal pavilion and will appreciate works at the same place at 4pm. You can easily come to no. 34 in this map. You get off at Achasan station, Line 5, exit 4 or Children's Grand Park station, Line 7, exit 1. There are restaurants for visitors in front of botanical garden and in amusement park, & etc.)

*****지난 7월 커먼 그라운드에서 이지현 선생님께 블로그 관리에 대해 부탁드렸는데 어렵사리 수락을 해주셔서 많은 부분을 맡아 수고하시게 되었습니다. 바쁜 일상중에 시간을 내어 그림그리려는 것이 최우선의 목적이므로 아무리 관리자라해도 그림그릴 시간을 보장해드려야 할 것입니다. 그동안은 새로 오시는 분들의 연락처를 받느라 오전 시간을 다 놓치곤 했던 문제점을 앞으로는 다음과 같은 방법으로 개선하려고 합니다.

1. 누구라도 스케치를 함께 하고 싶으신 분은 seoulurbansketchers@gmail.com 으로 참가하겠다는 메일을 보내주시기 바랍니다. 메일에는 한글, 영문 이름, 전화번호, 주로 사용하시는 이메일 주소가 기재되어야 합니다. 간략한 자기 소개가 있으면 인식에 도움이 되겠습니다.

2. 모임에 참가하고 스케치 끝나는 시간에 공유하신 그림은 seoulurbansketchers@gmail.com 으로 보내주시기 바랍니다. 그림을 보내신 분에 한해서 관리자가 서울어반스케쳐스의 블로그에 글을 올릴 수 있는 사용권한을 드리는 초대장을 발송합니다. 그림은 보내실 때에 1번 메일의 자기 소개 내용이 첨부되어야 본인 확인을 하는 관리자의 수고를 덜 수 있습니다.

3. 초대장을 수락하신 후 그리신 그림을 올리셔야 합니다. 방법을 모를 경우 관리자에게 메일 문의나 전화로 도움을 받으시기 바랍니다. 이 점은 최근 초대장을 수락하시고 그림을 올리지 않으시는 분들께도 해당됩니다.

우선 이런 방법으로 그림그리는 현장에서 주소 수집하는 번거로움을 덜었으면 하오니 적극적으로 협조해주시기 바랍니다. 그러면 관리자도 현장에서 바로 그림을 시작할 수 있을 것입니다.

지금까지 보여주신 그림에 대한 애정과 열정으로 끝없이 발전해 나가시기를 기대하며 어려운 관리자 직분을 수락하신 이지현 선생님께 깊이 감사드립니다.

summer night of Jongno 3-ga street (July 2017)

금번 서울어반스케처스 전시를 준비하면서 저는 개인 사정으로 7월초 주말 모임에 나가 함께 그림을 그리지 못했습니다. 대신 평일 퇴근 후 종로에 가서 해질 무렵 풍경과 야경을 그려보기로 하였습니다.

이런 목적으로 첫 번째로 종로를 방문한 것은 '17. 7. 25(화) 저녁 8시반이었습니다. 생각보다 퇴근이 늦어져 늦은 시각에 가게 되어, 상대적으로 좀 더 익숙하고 인공적인 빛이 많은 종로3가로 갔습니다.

I was not able to join the meetings around Jongno area with other Seoul urban sketchers at the weekends of early July and draw together for the upcoming exhibit, so I decided to visit Jongno a few times in the weekday evenings after work.

My first evening sketch of Jongno happened at 8.30pm on Tuesday 25 July 2017. I chose Jongno 3-ga, as I am relatively more familiar with that street, compared to Jongno 5-ga, etc.

탑골공원 건너편에서 자리를 잡고 서서 스케치하는 동안 수많은 사람들과 버스, 자가용이 지나가는 것을 보았습니다. 눈이 부실만큼 환한 인공 불빛이 거리를 비추고 있었습니다. 이미 해가 졌지만 거리는 여전히 밝았습니다. 

개인적으로 인공 불빛을 좋아하지는 않는데다, 평일 저녁이다보니 정장 차림의 많은 사람들이 일이나 식사를 마치고 늦은 시각 아마도 집으로 바삐 향하는 모습을 보니, 마음이 유쾌하지만은 않았습니다.

그래도 선선한 바람이 불어 야외에 1시간 이상 서서 그림을 그려도 괜찮은 환경이었고, 무성한 초록의 여름 나무가 제가 무척이나 좋아하는 계절 한 가운데 있음을 새삼 깨닫게 해 주었습니다.

I was not completely feeling pleasant and easygoing amid the crowd and traffic, under the dazzling artificial lights from the sign boards, shops and cars. Furthermore, I sympathised with the exhausted workers, who were heading home quite late after work or dinner. 

Nevertheless, I was grateful for the free time I had, drawing outside with the summer night breeze and the green, lively trees along the streets. Yes, I was reminded of how much I love the season, the midsummer.

가방이 무거워 어깨가 아파졌고 다음 날 또 평일 일상생활 걱정으로, 펜 스케치에 간단히 색연필로 주요 색만 표시(?)하고 집으로 가는 버스를 잡아탔습니다.

I did not colour my sketches on site, because my shoulder ached with the heavy bags and I got worried about tomorrow.

Hanging works in Topgoal Art Center

Hi sketchers! 

Today we finished to hang works for exhibition in Topgoal Art Center of the Senior Welfare Center of Seoul. Because it locates in Jongno district and the users of the welfare center are accustomed to the scenery of Jongno where they pass very often. So the gallery official staffs set this project to show them the Jongno scenery seen with fresh eyes of sketching artists. During the last month we put all efforts to capture the scenes in that area against terrible heat wave and pouring rain. All the staffs visited while we were hanging expressed how much they were pleased with this exhibition. We were happy to hear that. And the curator, Ms. Hong, said "All these sketches look far better than the images sent in mails!" We shared all the same feelings of satisfaction looking around the exhibition hall. "Sweet after bitter" came true.

한달 넘게 준비해 온 '탑골 미술관 서울어반스케쳐스 초대전 - 즐거운 나의 종로' 전시회의 준비를 마쳤습니다. 관장님, 미술관 과장님, 큐레이터선생님, 디자이너 선생님도 오셔서 스케치 보시고 매우 만족하셔서 함께 땀흘리며 준비해온 저희도 기뻤고 감사했습니다.

문화의 거리 인사동 가까이에 위치한 훌륭한 공간에서 작가님들의 그림들이 더욱 빛을 발함에 모두 공감했습니다. 그토록 빠른 시간내에 이토록 멋진 작품들을 출품해 주신 작가님들의 역량이 방문하시는 모든 분들에게 커다란 즐거움을 선사하리라고 생각합니다.

탑골 미술관 관계자 여러분들의 배려와 이해에 거듭 감사드리며 수고하신 출품작가님들 오늘도 수고많으셨습니다. 감사합니다!

Days later, from Aug. 10 to Aug. 25, Seoul Urban Sketchers will have the 6th exhibition invited by the Topgoal Art Center. The gallery is located in the first floor of the Senior Welfare Center of Seoul(서울노인복지센터) in Jongno district of Seoul. The title of the exhibit will be "My Merry Jongno" symbolizing the location "Jongno" district. In this exhibit 14 sketchers will participate in.
The welfare center runs kinds of classes for the seniors and the users in lunch time amount to 2800 to 3000. I visited there from time to time for sketching having delicious lunch and juice and tea at cafe run by senior female members. For the coming exhibit I sketched more to introduce the activities and the features of the building. Though the center opened on April 2001 the increasing users show how much the programs held for the senior people have been necessary. And the gallery was opened on May 2013. It's very impressive that lots of male senior than female frequent to the building compared to the other welfare centers. Program and location may be some reasons. Sketching these ones many senior members showed interest in sketching and liked sketches.

최근에 종로 그림 전시를 앞두고 탑 미술관이 속해 있는 서울노인복지센타를 방문하여 이모저모를 그린 스케치 모음입니다. 훈훈한 분위기 속에 다양한 프로그램을 즐기는 어르신들이 이번 전시회에 많은 관심을 보여주셔서 좋은 결실을 맺기를 기대합니다.

The first royal palace of Korea "Gyeongbokgung"

Sitting at the Gyeongbokgung  palace-the first royal palace of Chosun Dynasty 1392~1910- stairs ,
 I took a look at the numerous tourists who walked  through the Gwanghawmun - the main gate of Gyeongbokgung and I drew a sketch this landscape .
It was the first time to draw places where many people were passing by and I felt something inside of me was changing.
The view of Gwanghwamun - the main gate of this palace  -  resembles our history, which is regarded as a failure to modernize.
This place  shows to be modernized in the past without intermediate processes.
and  a contrasting  view of the past and contemporary  architectures.
It was very dramatic landscape and I imagined a king who was  from the  Chosun Dynasty era and he  was surprised when he  just got up in the morning  by seeing this scenery .

광화문을 바라보며 그렸습니다.

광화문 너머로 보이는 풍경이
경복궁과 대조적으로  매우 현대적입니다.
근대화에 실패했다고 평가받는 우리 역사처럼
과거에서  근대를 생략하고 바로 현대로 넘어온
드라마틱한 풍경이 인상적이어서 그려보았습니다.


잠시 조선의 왕이 아침에 눈을  떴을 때
이 풍경을 보게 된다면 어떤 기분일까 생각해 봅니다.
타임머신을 타고 온다면 이런 느낌이 아닐까하면서
상상으로 SF 영화의 한 장면을 찍어봅니다.
