Sketches at the Munmyo & Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul

We gathered at the entrance of the Sungkyunkwan Univ. After 10:30 am we went to Munmyo first. Inside there were guys with white traditional clothes with black hat for the ceremony. They were busy for the preparation for the ceremony on the 15th day (lunar calendar) of each month at the Confucian Shrine at Munmyo. They wore ritual clothes. The third man with red costume was said as official from the government at that time of Joseon dynasty. I heard that such ceremony was held twice a month every first day and the 15th to memorize Confucian. Anyhow it was a fortune to see such ceremony unexpectedly. 

After having lunch I moved to the university located at near the Munmyo. It was cool with breeze in spite of hot sunlight. I captured part of a building of the univ. under the shadow of trees.

After the typoon the weather was really fantastic. We could enjoy the sunlight and wonderful sketching place. I visited there several times. But I love to see the long Korean traditional style building with big ginko trees of 400 years old. Additionally nearby university gives modern feelings with young students and newly built campus buildings different from the Munmyo, Confucian Shrine.

A. Take Seoul Metro #Line 4 and get off at “Hyehwa” Station.

B. Take exit #1 and walk straight for 200m.

C. You can find a stop for the shuttle bus to the campus (300KRW). (approximately 10~15 minutes’ walk from the subway station to the campus).

성균관대 정문에서 오전 10시 30분에 다같이 모인후  각자 스케치하고
4시 30분 같은 장소에 다시 모여 그림공유하고 사진찍고 마무리합니다.
현대적인 성균관대학교 건물과  대성전,동무,서무,명륜당  등
전통적인 건물이 어울어진 풍경이   다양한 스케치 소재를 제공하는 장소입니다.
성균관대 주변과 대학로도 같이 그려보실 수 있습니다.
8월 말이라  7월 모임보다는 무덥지 않을 것 같으니
그림그리기 괜찮을  듯 합니다.

Drawing in Mosque located in Itaewon

On July 21^st, Seoul Urban Sketchers had World Wide Sketcher meeting at Islamic central Mosque which is located in Itaewon. The Mosque was built in 1970 and the harmony of the white building and the blue tiles was gorgeous and unusual. The crescent moon for symbol of Islam and the phrase, arabic written in green, “god is great” were impressive.

Mosque is located on a hill, thus it has a panoramic view of Itaewon. The worship services are held five times a day, sunrise, noon, afternoon, sunset, and at night. On the day we were drawing, services were not held, so it was perfect day to sketch except of terribly hot. I was disappointed by the fact that visitors could not enter the Mosque, hence we could not sketch the inside. But I was very impressed by Urban Sketcher’s passion as hot as the weather.

In the afternoon, I went to a cool cafe near the mosque because the weather was so hot!!

And drew the opposite building.

 오후 그림은 사원 근처 카페에서 보이는 맞은편 건물을 그렸습니다.

One more painting, a telephone pole.

같은 카페에서 전봇대가 보이는 풍경을 하나 더 그려봤네요.

it was so hot, but all sketchers were passionate.

it gave me a lot of impetus.

and it was a good time cause i could focus on the paintings.

더운 날씨에도 불구하고 열정을 불태우시는 스케쳐분들을 보고

많은 자극을 받고 왔습니다.

반나절, 오롯이 그림에만 집중할 수 있었던 시간이어서 좋았네요.

7월 21일 지독하리만큼 더운 날씨였지만 스케치 모임에 처음으로 참가했습니다.

10분 정도 지나 도착해보니 이태원 모스크 앞에는 종이와 화판 또는 스케치북을 펼치고 그림 그리는 스케쳐들이 많았습니다.

폭염의 날씨였지만 놀랍게도 10분이나 참가하셨더군요.

저는 이번에 처음으로 참가해서 스케치 2점 남겼네요.

하나는 모스크 정면을 바라보며 벤치에서, 또 하나는 모스크에서 10분 정도 걸어가면 있는 카페 창가에서.

열정과 스케치 실력이 대단하신 스케쳐 분들을 보며 더위를 잊었네요.
다들 만나뵙게 되서 반갑습니다~

다음에도 즐거운 스케치 모임이 되었으면 합니다.

Last Saturday, it was midsummer with the sweltering heat and humidity. For the 60th World Wide SketchCrawl, we Seoul sketchers met at the Seoul Central Mosque (서울중앙성원) located in Hannam-dong (한남동), Yongsan-gu (용산구), Seoul. The Seoul Central Mosque built in 1976, was established to be a place to worship for Muslims in Korea as well as to educate the larger public about Islam and Islamic cultures. The Seoul Central Mosque is a place of religious, and Islamic rules and customs should be respected, so we cared about every move during the sketch time inside the precincts of the mosque.

The beautiful mosque is famous for its characteristically Islamic design in the middle spot between the Han River and Namsan, but will be scheduled to reconstruction in modern style sooner or later. 

Outside the mosque, there were many halal restaurants and shops where we can watch a lot of Muslims and the public convenience, Islamic bookstore, consists of a halal supermarket, travel agencies.

I sketched the symbolic mosque from various angles, exotic surrounding scenes in and outside the precincts. It was an exciting sketch time overcoming the terrible heat.
