My close relative was hospitalized by pneumonia at Seran General Hospital in January.

The hospital is located at Muak-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. There is a famous Seodaemun 

Independence Park across the Tongil-ro street. Though the hospital is middle scale with 250 beds founded in 1987, it is always busy with lots of patients and visitors by the traffic convenience of subway and bus transportation.

I visited my relative several times and sketched in and out of the hospital. At first I began to capture the whole figure of the hospital and the surroundings. Inside the hospital I drew some scenes such as waiting room, administration, blood test room, nurses station, etc. Staying at the hospital and drawing them, I felt warm relationship between patients and nursing people. And I wished their getting well too.

It might be the coldest day in this winter. Though the throat of Susan was not good for outdoor sketching she arrived before 10:30. I looked for Eunice because she left message that she would join us till 10:30. By a call to the temple office I heard that the bus would start on 11 o'clock. We met women who would wait the bus too. We talked while waiting for it in the ATM room of Nonghyup bank where we could see the bus. At last we got on it and arrived at the temple. Susan was so pleased with the beautiful scenery and the others too. Wow, a young woman in the administration office in temple addressed us. She was the new comer, Eunice. She arrived at getting on the bus on 10:00 am. The bus was running on 10 and 11 am if there's not big events. I felt so sorry that I didn't confirm exactly. After buying small rice bags we visited the main temple and bowed paying respect to Buddha. 

The temple covered with snow and rocks was very beautiful. We planned to sketch for an hour and have lunch at temple. Because the bus would leave on 1 and 4 in the afternoon. We tried to get on the shuttle bus starting on 1 pm. After sketching shortly we moved to the dining room where we could warm ourselves around the hot stove. We thanked for the delicious lunch provided for free by the temple and had lunch sharing our sketches. By the kind help of the believers we could finish our sketching trip on a cold day. Thank you so much Susan and Eunice! 

매운 추웠던 날씨에 감기 끝에 목소리도 좋지 않았던 수잔을 만나면서 스케치 정신이 어떠해야하는지 다시 느꼈어요. 이리 저리 문의 끝에 11시에 출발한다는 것을 알았고 참석하겠다고 댓글을 남기신 강은영님이 오시지 않아 횡단보도에서 만난 여자분에게 '혹시 강은영씨인가요?'했더니 아니라면서 삼천사 가는 버스를 물었더니 자신도 거기가니 같이 가자고 해서 얼마나 반가왔던지요. 매사 확인 또 확인 해야하는데 지난 4일간 어머니가 병원에 입원하셔서 수발하느라 정신이 없었다는 핑계를 대어 봅니다. 다행히 어머니께서 금요일에 퇴원을 할 수 있어서 그나마 삼천사에 갈 수 있어서 감사했구요. 절의 사무실에서 만났던 강은영님은 또 얼마나 반가왔는지요. 혹한에 혼자 거기까지 오는 성의와 의지에 놀라고 감사했습니다. 샹하이에서 일하는 동안 수잔의 남편분의 이름을 들었다고 하여 또 다시 좁은 지구와 스케쳐의 인연에 놀랐구요. 짧은 시간의 만남이었지만 많은 교류를 할 수 있었읍니다. 내려오는 버스에서 수잔은 자신이 일하는 하나교등학교에서 내렸고 내년에도 만날 수 있기를 바라며 아쉬운 작별을 하였습니다.  

셔틀 버스에서 수잔 옆에 앉으셨던 부인께서 그림에 관심을 표하셔서 잠시 이야기를 나누었고 구파발 사거리에서 다 함께 내린 후 유니스와 함께 근처 까페에 가서 한시간 넘게 이야기를 이어갔어요. 그림, 불교에 대해서 경험담을 나누었습니다. 그 부인께도 모임 안내를 하기로 하며 헤어졌구요. 이런 저런 만남이 다 인연으로 이어져서 자기 개발과 공익에 도움이 되었으면 합니다.  너무나 추웠기에 오래도록 추억으로 남을 스케치 모임이 되리라 생각하며 참석해주신 수잔, 유니스 그리고 따뜻한 커피 너무나 감사했습니다.
