At the beginning of July, I took a four-day trip joining a package tour to Beijing with BH  Yoo for urban sketching. Beijing, the capital city in China, is larger than Seoul, both by area and by population. There is a lot of most popular attractions, historic sites, iconic valleys and lakes and other tourism resources. Despite the scorching sun and busy schedules of sightseeing for three days, I sketched everything continuously as much as I could everywhere we went.
It was an invaluable travel sketch time and a good opportunity to improve my drawing and to overcome difficulties.

역사도시 북경의 스케일과 명소들, 생활상을 체험한 소중한 여행이었습니다.
처음 가는 북경여행이라는 설레임 속에 스케치도구를 많이 준비했지만,
3박4일 관광투어의 빡빡한 일정에 숙소가 멀고 자유시간이 너무 짧아서 아쉬웠습니다.
수많은 인파속에 가이드 따라다니랴 주마간산식으로 스케치하랴, 공연장 관람석 여건등...
현장에서 물감칠을 못해서 아쉬웠읍니다만, 내공을 쌓아가는데 크게 단련이 되는
값진 어반스케치 여행이었습니다~~

I drew a traffic jammed street scene from the tour bus. 

It took one and a half hours to pass 1 km.

 How much they liked the situation! It was a surprising and touching sharing moment between Chinese and Korean p through sketches. He drew two guys. Other men envied so much though they enjoyed a lot.

YH Lee being asked from a man who tripped with us was drawing him in Tian Jin Airport. We told about the Seoul Urban Sketchers and asked them to join us in the future. 

YH Lee and I joined a package tour to Beijing from Jul 1 to Jul. 4, 2017. China is one of big countries. The capital city, Beijing, was big too. Especially I was surprised by the Long Qing Xia located near the big city. Though I couldn't walk along the Great Wall due to extremely short time for I chose to sketch rather than to walk up. Most of the sketches were done between one to 30 mins(Great Wall). Crossing the Jageumseong and Ehwawon Garden it was hard to capture some scenes at all. The most important thing was not to miss the team among crowded tourists. The scale of the attractive spots was beyond imagination. Though we couldn't sketch as many as we wanted the trip gave lots of moments with beautiful scenery and familiar communication between tourists. 

I used charcoal, conte, water soluble color pencils in most sketches. I found those dry materials were very useful in short sketching time. 

지난 며칠 중국의 북경을 다녀왔습니다. 단체 관광인지라 그림은 다른 분들 사진찍는 시간에 그립니다. 가이드가 주는 시간은 길어야 만리장성에서 30분이었고 대부분 5분 안입니다. 그 짧은 시간에 천단공원에서 스케치하고 있는데 필리핀 관광객들이 말을 걸어오며 자기가 우리나라 탈랜트 이민호라고 하여 닮았다고 하니 환히 웃더군요. 그 미소를 보면서 필리핀에도 가보고 싶어졌습니다. 발 마사지 샵에서 마사지 받는 동안 용경협이 좋았다고 하니 영어도 잘 안되고 하여 제가 그린 그림을 보여주니 알아 보고 엄지 척하더군요. 그림 한장으로 대화가 되는 순간이었어요. 순박해 보이는 젊은 친구들이었습니다. 문화 사절이 되는 시간이었어요. 이샘이 자신의 마사지해주는 젊은이를 그리는 동안 제 마사지사에게 you도 그려 줄것이다하고 손짓하니 "니가...."하더군요. 어찌나 우스웠던지요. 상대방은 '니'라고 배운 모양입니다. 

오고 가는 시간빼고 쇼핑 옵션이 네군데나 되고 하니 사실 관광시간은 충분하지 않았습니다. 더구나 저렴한 비용으로 숙소를 한시간 반 거리에 잡고 보면 이동하는 길에서 정체가 심하니 그 또한 시간 낭비라 할 수 있구요. 그래서 가이드님이 항공과 숙소를 참고할 것을 권하더군요. 오랜 경험에서 나온 팁이라 할 수 있습니다. 저희 같은 경우에는 노쇼핑 코스가 필수적이구요. 자금성과 이화원을 그릴 시간이 없었던 것이 아쉬웠습니만 가깝고도 멀었던 북경의 수박 겉핥기 여행을 잘 마쳤습니다. 

재료는 수용 색연필, 목탄, 콘테를 썼어요. 수채 도구는 아예 가져가지 않았습니다. 색연필 색 고를 시간도 없어서 주로 목탄을 많이 썼어요. 참으로 유용한 도구라는 것을 재삼 확인할 수 있었고 앞으로도 많이 숙달해야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

안녕하세요?

지난 6월 24일 정동 모임 때, 공식적인 모임의 시작과 끝을 함께 하지 못하여 많은 분들께 인사드리지 못했지만, 그 날 낮에 제가 그린 그림을 올립니다.

 - 제가 그림을 그린 정동 배재학당역사박물관 앞에서 그림 그리고 계셨던 두 어분께 간단히 인사 드렸습니다만, 통성명도 못 하고 오후 4시 다같이 그림 보는 시간에 참석하지 못 해서 제 그림을 보여드리지 못하여 죄송스럽게 생각합니다.

오랜만에 찾은 덕수궁 돌담길을 따라 천천히 걷다 한 번도 가보지 않은 방향의 길로 들어서니 옛스러워 보이는 건물이 있어 들어가 보게 되었습니다. 마침 '~~ 역사박물관'이라는 표지가 있어 이 곳의 옛 스토리를 조금이나마 알 수 있을까 하여 들어가서 둘러보고 나와 그림을 그렸습니다. 

아펜젤러/노블 선교사 가문이 설립한 '배재학당'의 역사 박물관으로 현재 쓰이고 있는, 과거에는 '배재학당'의 교사(school building)로 쓰였던 건물이라고 합니다.

Sketches with Seoul UrbanSketchers

After a long time I Joined to sketch with Seoul Urban Sketchers at Jeongdong, Seoul.
The weather was a bit cloudy, pretty many sketchers came to draw.

The first gathering place was in front of Deoksugung palace.
Just in time, It was held that the palace gatekeeper-changing ceremony

The event time was done so quickly, I had to move to find something to draw.

Walking around Deoksugung Stonewall, there were flea market. and I saw something interesting item. 

It was Rolling paper note pad. but in my case (as you also I think) It was seen funny sketch book. even endless paper :)

I cannot help buying it. after right I drew on there with it.

After walking a little bit I arrived at Paichai-hakdang that the first modern educational institution in Korea; the Appenzeller found

do not waste time. just draw!

It started to raining that time. I have to find somewhere inside. 

so I went to Jeongdong observation platform the next gathering place.

It has so nice view to see the Seoul's skyline. and there was a cafe (can sketch)

It was good time to draw around Jeongdong with Seoul urban sketchers!

Next month We (Urban sketchers Suwon) will meet in 22,Jul at Hwaseoung temporary palace, Suwon.

Although it was a wet and humid day, it was a happy day for me to meet and draw pictures at the sketch meeting. The tranquil Anglican church in downtown Seoul was beautiful. Before that, I made a sketch of the people who drink tea at a cafe in Deoksugung Palace. Some people left their seats, and there was a sad sketch.

The 6th Exhibition of Seoul Urban Sketchers at Topgoal Art Center - 제 6회 서울 어반 스케쳐스 탑골 미술관 전시회 안내

안녕하세요!

비가 내린 후라 많이 시원합니다. 아마도 장마가 곧 시작되지 않을까 싶습니다.
긴 여름동안 건강히 보내시기 바라며 전시회 소식과 더불어 스케치모임을 알려드립니다.

2009년 6월 개설된 서울 어반 스케쳐스는 2011년 6월의 첫번 전시회를 시작으로 총 5회의 전시회를 갖었습니다. 이번 6회 전시회는 서울 경운동에 위치한 서울노인복지센터 1층에 위치한 탑골 미술관에서 열릴 예정입니다. 시기는 8월 10일부터 8월 25일로 정해졌습니다. 전시 기간 중에 두차례의 어르신들과 함께 하는 체험 스케치 워크샵을 운현궁에서 가질 계획입니다.  두 차례의 워크샵 날짜는 추후에 공지하겠습니다. 종로 그림이 테마가 되는 전시회가 될 것이어서 종로 일대에서 스케치를 하려 하며 일정은 다음과 같습니다.

7월 8일 : 종로 타워, 조계사, 인사동, 낙원동 (10시 30분 부터 자유 스케치 후 오후 4시경 공평동 맥도날드에서 만남)
7월 15일 : 경복궁, 삼청동 (10시 30분 부터 자유 스케치 후 오후 4시 경복궁 국립 고궁박물관 앞에서 만남)
7월 22일 : 청계천, 광장 시장, 동대문 주변 (10시 30분 부터 자유 스케치 후 오후 4시 청계천 5가 마전교에서 만남)

7월 29일 : #56차 월드 와이드 스케치크롤이 건국대역 인근의 커먼 그라운드에서 오전 10시 30분 부터 예정대로 열립니다. 공지글 참고하시기 바랍니다.

스케치 장소의 범위가 넓은 관계로 시작과 마침에 만나기가 어려울 수 있습니다. 여러 장소가 포함될 수 있도록 편중되지 않게 스케치해 주시면 좋겠어요. 오전 오후 나누어 작업하신다면 커다란 도전의 기회가 되지 않을까 생각됩니다.

We're glad to inform you about the 6th Exhibition at the Topgoal Art Center in Seoul Senior Welfare Center located at Jongno-gu. The exhibition period will be from Aug. 10 to Aug. 25. The official staffs ask us to show lots of scenery of Jongno as many as possible. So we try to have three times' sketching meetups in Jongno area as follows:

July 8th : Jongno Tower, Jogyesa(temple), Insa-dong, Nagwon-dong (We'll meet at 4 pm at McDonalds in Gongpyeong-dong after free sketching from 10:30 am.)
July 15th : Gyeongbokgung, Samcheong-dong (We'll meet at the entrance of National Palace Museum of Korea at 4 pm after free sketching from 10:30 am.)
July 22th : Cheonggyecheon, Gwangjang Market, area around Dongdaemun Gate (We'll meet at 4 pm on the Majeon bridge of Cheonggyecheon 5th street near Gwangjang Market after free sketching from 10:30 am.)
