sketching with Stephen Kopp on Jan. 9th, 2013

Happy New Year!

Stephen Kopp who has been sketching with Seoul Urban Sketchers for years came to Seoul this winter. We'll have a meetup at Doota Building located near Dongdaemun Great Gate on Jan. 9th, 2013. Hope to meet you at 7th floor, Food court on 10 : 30 am. See you soon!

sketches at shopping mall

at the FILA shop in Home Plus, World Cup stadium branch, pencil, watercolor, 13 x 17 cm

Pho Tai(Vietnamese Noodle Soup & Asian Food Restaurant) at the 7th floor of the DOOTA building
pen, watercolor, 19 x 25.5 cm

It was too cold to sketch outside these days. I took chances to sketch inside. Food court, shopping mall, and department stores are good for sketchers. Mannequin seems artificial but looks fashionable. I just thank for the space.

A few days ago, I had a chance to sketch at Yonsei University Sinchon Campus near my office. Yonsei University was established in 1885 with an educational mission based on the Christian principles of truth and freedom, and that is not only one of the oldest universities but also the top three comprehensive universities in Korea.
The campus is located in Sinchon minutes away from the center of the metropolis downtown Seoul, and is well arranged in a colorful and natural setting with mix of old and new buildings.
I sketched some symbolic sceneries of the campus among the number of buildings, and enjoyed campus-life atmosphere with the university students.

christmas tree in hospital

14 x 19 cm

I sketched this one at the lobby(3rd floor) of the Korea University Anam Hospital today. The lobby was decorated with plants, small pond and comfortable stools. Christmas tree looked good with yellow lights and the paintings on the wall.

Drawing with App. 2

It's always fun to do with my Galaxy note. It becomes my habit.
I draw almost everything that i see such as people i like, trees, buildings, cats  and so on.
I want to atempt more lively lines and  color working. And painting applications is so much helpful for me.
No need to hesitate or worry. Here are some of sketches with Application.

street scene at Jeongreung-ro, Seongbuk-ku, Seoul

pencil, watercolor, 25 x 25 cm

I always have interest in overpass highways. The volume, color, contrast, geometric shape, dynamic features with vehicle on and under caught my eye every time I passed. To some may it look like a monter but I thank for the monstrous existence. I sketched at the entrance gate of Bongugsa(temple) in the late afternoon of November 15, 2012. I felt like that the water on paper seemed to be frozen and melted. To that degree was it cold.

Sogang university was established in 1960 by the Society of Jesus to provide an education based on Catholic belief and inspired by the Jesuit educational philosophy, in conformity with the Korean
tradition of education.
The campus located at the foot of Nogosan Mountain, and lies close to Sinchon Subway Station in downtown Seoul. A few famous modern architecture and numbers of contemporary buildings are mixed together felicitously, and they are in harmony with nature and the surroundings around campus.
I sketched strolling in the elegant campus, and enjoying beautiful fall leaves pleasantly.

on a rainy day at Angug-dong & Nagwon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul

I had some business at Jongno tax office. When I came out, it was raining. I had no umbrella but a small foldable field chair. Passing Yulgog-ro I found an alcove at Hana bank, Angug-dong branch, where I could sketch the opposite without getting wet.  The yellow leaves looked more vivid on a rainy day.

pen, pastels, 26 x 37 cm

I went to Nagwon musical instrument shopping center, Nagwon-dong for sketching inside,  But the outside scenery was more attractive by raining. As soon as I sat on the 2nd step deck which leaded to Tapgol Park, I saw a woman carrying lunch plate to be delivered to the shop keepers on her head. The shopping mall is the biggest one in nation. On rainy, windy, or bitterly cold days it's very recommendable to go there.

at the palace, Changgyeonggung(창경궁, 昌慶宮)

street scenery along the wall of the palace

Myeongjeongjeon

Main gate seen from the Myeongjeongjeon

The palace, Changgyeonggung, locates at Yeji-dong, Changgyeonggung-ro across Seoul National University Hospital. I went there on last Friday in the afternoon. Years had passed since I'd visited. People walked along the wall of the palace under the colored big trees. Cars were running fast on the street. But inside the palace it was very quiet. While sketching I could see a pretty couple in Korean traditional attirement taking photos before wedding. Near to sunset the palace showed another kind of beauty with dark shade and streaks of light which was different from one with full sunlight. I met one guy with a big camera, who was a painter. I introduced him about Urban Sketchers blogs and Sketchcrawl events too.
