two paintings by Lucy Baik at Jeju island

Lucy Baik sent me a mail attached with two works. Those were made at Jeju island where she went on holiday. She loved it for its beauty. Why not? Posting her works I wished we'd go there for sketching together some day.

Thank you Lucy, and hope to see you next meetup!

Cheonggyecheon (청계천) is an 11 km long stream that rises near Bugaksan Mt. and Inwangsan Mt. and flows from the west to the east of downtown Seoul. Created as part of an urban renewal project, Cheonggyecheon is a restoration of the stream that was once there before during the Joseon Dynasty. It's very serene with small waterfalls, and nearly two dozen overhead bridges. Cheonggye Plaza(청계광장) in Sejong-ro(세종로), one of the busiest boulevards in Seoul, is situated at the fountainhead of Cheonggyecheon Stream. There were overflowing with colorful sceneries and crowds including lots of foreign tourists.
The weather was so fine, I sketched with Seoul usk members around Cheonggyecheon Stream and Plaza. We enjoyed sketching several fantastic scenes such as buildings, stream, waterfall, people, streetscapes, and so on.
.

sketches at Cheonggyecheon, Seoul

front of Oldenberg sculpture
<29x21cm,oil pastel,water color>

<29x21cm,oil pastel,water color>

 Cheonggyecheon
<29x21cm,ball pen>

exhibition on-the-spot

Cheonggyecheon has been the subject of water control projects since Joseon dynasty. The stream began to be covered around 1930. And high-level road over the covered way was finished on 1970. But the environmental pollution and old structure of the road had been raising matters about safety.  So the road was removed by two years' demolishing work from 2003 to 2005. Now 5.8 km section of the stream was recovered and changed into walking road and green area.
It was very crowded by citizens and tourists after several days' raining. We enjoyed sketching too with 14 participants including new comers, Kate, John, and Lee Jeong-hee. Much thanks!

plaza in front of Oldenberg sculpture at the entrance of Cheonggyecheon
( ink on paper  41 x 27cm )

pharmacy(응암오거리 약국)

colored pencil, ink, water colors on paper

Car drawings

The Bosingak Belfry (보신각), so-called Jonggak(종각), sits in a part of Seoul considered the most central in the city, both geographically and historically. It was originally constructed in 1396 but destroyed numerous times of the years from fires and wars. The current building, completed in 1979, is a replica of the original traditional design but a reinforced concrete structure, its significance lying in the site and its history rather than the building itself. In the Joseon Dynasty, the bell was hit to announce the opening and closing of the 4 gates around Seoul. Recently, to commemorate the history, everyday at noon except Monday, the building has opened to citizen and tourists for bell-ringing ceremony.
Last weekend, I sketched around the pretty historical landmark surrounded by high rise buildings and busy roads, feeling the harmony of old and new in central Seoul.
.
