Gocheok Sky Dome(고척 스카이돔) is Korea's first domed baseball stadium located in Gocheok-dong, Seoul. The stadium replaced Dongdaemun Baseball Stadium(동대문 야구장) and opened on 15 September 2015. It has a capacity of about 20,000 people and is home to the Nexen Heroes(넥센 히어로즈) baseball team. When the professional baseball season is over, the stadium can be hired as a concert venue and other events with capacity for around 22,000 spectators. 

Last week I went to the new Sky Dome to sketch several times .Though the stadium was relatively small compared to other countries' ones, I was impressed by the futuristic exterior and the fantastic atmosphere.  I enjoyed the baseball game sketching some dynamic and colorful scenes in and out the stadium. It was very pleasant and exciting sketch time without worrying about weather conditions.

Back garden of Sejong Center, Gwanghwamun is always crowded with citizens. Especially the place is loved by nearby working office men and women for chatting after lunch.

The garden of Guui catholic church is next to the east gate of Children's Grand Park. So the scenery was very beautiful. The place seems very good for sketching and relaxing after walking all the ways in the park.

요즘 비도 내려주고, 바람은 세게 부는 날도 있지만 녹음 우거진 경치는 매우 아름답습니다. 어디를 가도 그림 소재가 많아 좋습니다.

Very sad news from Germany

I am very sad to post the news that the German Urban sketcher Florian Afflerbach died by accident on May 5th. We will miss him so much. Please visit here for more.

어반 스케쳐로 활동하시던 Florian Afflerbach님께서 지난 5월 5일 사고로 돌아가셨습니다.
갑작스러운 비보에 전 세계의 스케쳐들이 깊은 슬픔에 잠겨있습니다.

삼가 그 분의 명복을 빕니다.

이곳을 방문하셔서 애도의 글을 남겨 주시면 유족분들께 큰 힘이 되겠습니다.

푸른 순록이 있는

건물앞에 우뚝 서있는 푸른 순록 조각상이 도시를 내려다 보는 모습이 인상 깊었습니다.
마치 깊은 산속에서 막 서울 도심 속으로 내려와 각지고 네모난 건물과 복잡한 차들을 보다가 자신도 모르게 각지고 푸르게 굳어 버린 듯 합니다.
Mecenat polis Mall은 미로 같은 동선임에도 불구하고 곳곳에 시원하게 휴식공간이 있어서
답답하지 않았습니다.
직선이나 직각이 아닌 둥근 곡선이 이곳 저곳 의 가게들이 언듯 언듯 보여서 발길을 이끕니다.

Deoksugung Palace is famous for Korean traditional palace with history in busiest downtown Seoul. The palace sits alongside a series of western style buildings that add to the uniqueness of the surrounding scenery. A fascinating mix of traditional Korean and Western-style neoclassical structures and nearby areas are very popular for visitors for the beauty and tranquility. Inside the palace, the museum building, connected with beautiful bright colored neoclassical-style Seokjojeon(석조전), was constructed in 1938. It's now the MMCA (National Museum of Modern Contemporary Art) Deoksugung,with a collection of permanent and temporary contemporary art. 

Last week, a sunny spring day, I visited the museum and enjoyed the exhibition of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Korean Modern Masters, Pen Varlen(변월룡 1916~90). Pen,Russian-Korean artist, is an important figure in Soviet socialist realism art. I appreciated his impressive masterpieces and sketched in and outside the museum with picturesque surroundings.

Last Saturday, in celebration of the 51st World Wide SketchCrawl, we Seoul urban sketchers met at Mecenatpolis Mall near Hapjeong Subway Station(합정역). Mecenatpolis (메세나폴리스) is one of the well-known landmarks of Seoul's Mixed-Use residential building. Mecenatpolis Mall on the lower level of the building embraces popular fashion brands, beauty shops, and a large grocery store, as well as various restaurants and coffee shops. There are also often performances held at Mecen Garden and the central square. 

The weather was not fine by yellow dust for sketching outdoors, so I couldn't help drawing under the lee of the building and the surroundings. But it was useful experience under unfavorable conditions.

Im Bo Young(임보영) was selling succulent goods at the 2nd floor corridor mall. I talked with her after sketching about the raising cactus and her family farm. She wanted to present a small one which could be attached on refrigerator. I declined gently because of my poor ability to raise plants.

It was not fine by severe yellow dust. Six sketchers including two newcomers(Kim Ji Hyun and Kim Eun Ji) and Don Yang. The place was very good with various views it possessed by itself and selling events on weekends. I tried pencils(2B and 5B) together and it inspired me to do more often.
Much thanks for all the participants in spite of bad air and busy schedule.

연일 황사로 많이 힘든 가운데 여섯명의 스케쳐들께서 모였어요. 멀리 미국에서 화가로 활동하시는 돈 양님께서 29년 만에 한국을 방문하여 짦은 시간이라도 스케치하려고 오신 것에 감동받았습니다. 시카고 어반 스케쳐에서도 활동하시며 티셔츠를 선물해주셨어요. 기념으로 간직하겠습니다. 사정이 생겨 일찍 귀가하신 새로 오신 분들께도 감사를 드립니다. 평소 잊고 지냈던 맑은 공기의 고마움을 다시 느낀 하루였습니다. 감사합니다!

I saw this scene this morning at the Sejongro catholic church. The flowers will be used for the praying meetings of Legio Mariae(Legion of Mary). I felt those flowers so beautiful with attractive figure of shade around the desk. I enjoyed the sweet fragrance while sketching.

오늘 아침 세종로 성당 로비에서 아름다운 꽃을 보고 그렸어요. 풍성한 꽃에서 나는 향기를 맡으면서 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다. 꽃도 꽃이지만 그림자의 모습이 매력적이었구요.

This month I attended the wedding of my college friend's son two times in different cities far from Seoul. The first place was Haeundae Grand Hotel in Busan City on 5th March, and the second was Hotel ICC in Daejeon City on 26th March. The wedding party including our alumni started from Seoul and moved on the chartered buses. Both wedding halls were crowded with guests and we congratulated wonderful wedding enjoying reception in celebration.
I sketched several scenes of wedding quickly among the guests. After leaving the wedding hall, I added colors and presented the sketches to my two friends for wedding gift. They were grateful to me for the sketches.
