Sketches at Noryangjin Fish Market, Seoul

pencil, pen, pastels, A 4

Weather was very good for sketching; shiny, warm, and above all not rainy different from the forecast report. All the market was bustling with customers and merchants.  Every participant captured characteristic subjects of his or her own. And we could sketch the fish stores from the corridor of 2nd floor which was connected to the Noryangjin subway station. At one o'clock we had very delicious and plentiful lunch at a fish restaurant on 2nd floor, about which we owed JW Park much thanks. On the way of sketching the woman along the wall of the narrow alley a young lady showed interest in our activity. We talked over the sketching and sharing opinions. She hoped to join next sketchcrawl with her child. Thank you all for the sincerity and arduous job you did in such a crowded place, one of the most big markets in Korea, perhaps!

flower(Angel's Trumpet)

pencil & watercolor, 18 x 25 cm

When I passed the alley at Nonhyundong, I used to stop to see this flower for a while. I didn't know the exact name of it. Yesterday when I was sketching the flower, a woman stopped saying 'Oh, you're sketching! I like the flower very much. Its fragrance at night is great.' So I asked her its name. She answered "Angel's Trumpet. When it blossoms it looks like a trumpet.' I agreed with her.  The flower was planted in pots in front of a eating house. Though it was before noon, it smelled good.

aerial ladder for moving

pencil and watercolor, A 4

An office at banpo building located at Nonhyundong was moving using aerial ladder. Moving gives interesting subjects for sketchers. Trucks, ladders, laborers, desks, and other belongings form many kinds of composition in the open space. Today I saw this scene. I started at once and finished with watercolors. Men related with the work came and saw the drawing. When I left they asked whether I would correct(add) or not. I answered 'mostly not, but I'd think after being dried completely'. And I didn't.

sketches around Sewoon Shopping Mall, Seoul

a scenery of neighboring buildings, pen and watercolor, 24.9 x 35cm

main entrance of Sewoon Shopping Mall from Jongno 3-ga, pen and watercolor, 24 x 33.8cm

viewed from 2nd floor on Sewoon shopping center, pen and watercolor, 24 x 33.8cm

the opposite side on Sewoon shopping center, pen and watercolor, 21 x 29.6cm
.
Sewoon Shopping Mall is a shopping area located between Jongno 3-ga and Toegyero 3-ga, which was the modernization icon of the city in the 1960s. The shopping area is well known for selling electronics. But recently, the Seoul metropolitan government began demolishing its buildings, starting with Hyundai Arcade, with the intention of building tree-covered plazas in their place.
The area around Sewoon shopping centre will be reconstructed to constitute central Seoul. Lots of old aged buildings in the neighborhood  harmonize with each other spontaneously. I will visit and sketch around the worn-out buildings frequently before demolition is accelerated.

sketches on small paper pad

at Nonhyundong, pen & pastels, 12 x 16 cm

removal of crane at construction field at Kukidong, pen and watercolor, 12 x 16 cm

I began to sketch the first one sitting on the terrace of a coffee shop under the awning. While keeping on adding colors it was raining. I found that the left side of trousers was wet by raindrops after I finished. And I took a photo in a hurry in order to leave the place turning the sketch clockwise by mistake!
