sketches at Okcheonam Temple, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul

Okcheonam (옥천암) is small and beautiful temple in Hongeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. The temple is located at the foot of the hill of Samgaksan Mountain, and beneath the precinct Hongjecheon stream flows throughout the year. Okcheonam dates back to the 14th century during the Goryeo dynasty, and is also famous for a carved Buddha. The granite carving is concave and painted in a lovely seashell white, and so called " The White Buddah(하얀 부처)". The temple buildings are built on narrow and steep bedrock linearly, nevertheless the hierarchial linkage of architectures seems very interesting and beautiful features harmonized with the natural landscape. I sketched the neat and beautiful temple looking at the harmonious roof lines fascinatedly.

There was an inaugural ceremony of the 34th executive chief of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order, Ja-Seung(자승스님). Lots of of monks, congregation, tourists, and representative chiefs of government departments, different religions participated to congratulate.

several sketches at Heungguksa Temple (흥국사) in Goyang City

This autumn I visited Heungguksa Temple twice for temple sketching. The temple is not so far from my village and access road is pretty smooth to approach. In the precincts of the temple,The yellow chrysanthemums were in full glory all over the place and I was fascinated by the scenic beauty of the colorful fall leaves around the temple. A number of temple buildings, including Yaksajeon (1686~),were well arranged harmoniously combined with one another surrounding the courtyard.
Sketching the traditional architecture is very helpful for me to develop the sense of proportion.

pencil sketches at church and temple

A man was calling at the resting place in Jongno catholic church.

 Marian garden at the church

It was rainy yesterday. I could sketch one sitting under the eaves having hot baked cake bought in the tent you could see in the sketch. It was really delicious.
8B pencil, 17.5 x 27.5 cm

The temple was more beautiful by colorful flower in chrysanthemum festival.

Women were praying.

Yesterday It was rainy a little. I sketched two at the Jongno catholic church. I walked down the Jongno way and dropped in the Jogyesa temple. There, unexpectedly I could be in the world of chrysanthemum. By raindrops the flowers looked more beautiful and vivider. People including foreign tourists took photos in front of them. The temple is a good place for lots of people to take a rest even for a while.

It was rainy and inclement weather, I joined in 40th World Wide SketchCrawl with Seoul sketchers around Jogyesa Temple located in downtown Seoul. Jogyesa Temple is an oasis of spiritual peace in the heart of the bustling metropolis. There are some historic cultural properties including traditional Korean architectures. Along the street around Jogyesa are many Buddhist specialty shops and some colorful facilities related to Buddhism. The traditional space in urban center is very interesting for our urban skechers. I sketched various sceneries here and there, looking around the peaceful temple.

A few days ago, I visited Jogyesa Temple located in the middle of Seoul. Jogyesa does not give off the solemn and traditional air of the other temples located deep in the mountains. But because it is located within the heart of the city, the public transportation is so convenient, and well combined with the sceneries of the old city Seoul. Maybe another interesting place in town where nature is present is a temple.
I sketched some colorful sceneries here and there delightfully around crowded precints of the temple.
