sketches in acrylics at Cheonggyecheon and Jongno, Seoul

scenery with Mojeongyo (bridge), acrylics, crayon, 39 x 27 cm

street scenery at Sambong-ro, Jongno
acrylics, crayon, 39 x 27 cm

Today, the end of Lunar new year holidays, I went to downtown for sketching for the weather forecast said it would be warm. But doing something near the cold water was not easy at all. The fabric which I used for water-absorbing was frozen. It might be caused by my location in shade. Passengers asked "Aren't your fingers cold?" I replied "Absolutely freezing!" But expecting that the spring will come soon I enjoyed the outdoor sketching.
After finishing the first one I moved to Burger King, Jongno district office branch to warm myself and sketch one more indoor. The place was excellent with my favorite views which I repeatedly kept drawing. This time I used acrylics and crayons. In both works changing light mattered as always, which compose the most attractive scenery in pictures.

scenery seen from Jongno Tower

charcoal, A 4

conte, pastels, A 4

These were made on the same spot of Jongno Tower 10th floor looking down the Jongno YMCA area. Along the Jongno 2-ga street there are rows of nice looking buildings. But behind of them we could see old and low buildings. By such contrast I could enjoy the various type of shadows in the afternoon. I often visit to see the movement of darkness. Last Feb. 1st I drew rapidly with charcoal. And yesterday I tried to capture in detail with conte adding pale pastel colors. I was excited with the strong contrast of light and dark changing every second.

at Myung Dong

MyungDong is located in the middle of Seoul.
The letter ' Myung= 明' means the sun and the moon, after the sun sets the moon rises so it means always bright place.
Inspite of the cold weather the street is full of people.
At 2 p.m. the street is filled with wagons, which is of stuff to eat.
It feels like it cheer up the street.
I drew 2 old fashioned buildings.

Last Saturday, It was very cold weather to sketch outdoors. For the 50th World Wide SketchCrawl, Seoul sketchers met at Myeong-dong, which is one of the busiest places in Seoul. Myeong-dong is a Mecca of commerce and finance, shopping and culture, arts and fashion of Korea and a very popular tourist destination of Jung-gu in downtown Seoul.
In the morning, I sketched some streetscapes and mannequins in and outside of Lotte Department building. After lunch, I moved to Myeong-dong Cathedral, and sketched colorful sceneries around the quiet cathedral and the bustling streets.
.

#50th World Wide SketchCrawl at Myeong-dong

I started first drawing at Lotte Cinema hall at 6th floor of Lotte department.

New comer (Kim Kyu-hun) at 1898 Myeongdong Cathedral

Cold weather of -15 degrees made us hard to expect many sketchers to join. But two brave new comers, Han Ju-hyeon and Kim Kyu-hun, came for sketching together. Much thanks to Lee Yong-hwan and Yun Young-sook from Yongin city too.
But the inside of department was warm for us to put off thick coats while sketching on bright bridge looking down both sides of urban features. We shared new comers' nice sketches which were made before. Those were inspiring. After having lunch we moved into Coffee Bean located across Myeongdong Cathedral. The place was nice for sketchers with good scenery through pane glass moving the ground floor to 2nd floor freely. After finishing we gathered at the plaza of '1898 Myeongdong Cathedral', basement of the cathedral, which was rebuilt under the previous parking lot. Sharing works done all day was always worthy for all of us. We shared experiences and tips.
Thank you so much for participating with courage and love for sketching together!

Though the weather was not warm, our outings were great. At Seoul station Rian, Susan's friend, joined us too. In spite of her busy working weekdays she was so eager to sketch Seoul, which inspired us so much. She enjoyed Korean food too. We had Korean traditional pancakes even at Gwangjang market, so crowded one. Much thanks for all her generous understanding about Korean culture and people. Hope her to come again soon and to be able to sketch all together!

Thank you so much, Susan, for your pretty presents and drawing too!
