two sketches around Dongdaemun Gate, Jongno-gu, Seoul

white house across the Naksan Fortress Wall,  near the Dongdaemun Gate,
pen, watercolor, A 4

I sketched two around the big gate. One was about a man who was arranging shoes on street. I love to capture those sellers on streets. I crossed the road and looked at the Naksan Fortress Wall. Across the wall white building with three big balls on wall caught my eye. Sun light made it look more beautiful.

some sketches in celebration of a wedding (결혼식장)

Last weekend, I attended the wedding of my colleague's son at Ofelis Wedding Convention(오펠리스 웨딩) located in Seosomun-dong(서소문동) near Seoul City Hall. The wedding hall was so elegant and crowded with guests including our intimate friends. We celebrated the beautiful wedding and enjoyed reception festively. While wedding ceremony, I sketched several scenes of wedding ceremony cautiously and quickly among the guests. In the wedding hall, painting is prohibited. So after leaving the wedding hall, I added colors as I saw. It was quite a pleasant sketch time.

the opening of the wedding ceremony (개회사), pen and watercolor,

officiant's message(주례사), pen and watercolor, pen and watercolor,

the groom sang a nuptial song(축가) for his bride, pen and watercolor,

sketches of scenes from the observatory tower at Incheon wharf

pen, watercolor, 12.5 x 18 cm

Though it was so cold outside the inside the observatory tower was warm by sunlight enough to be there without strong wind. The view all around the tower was wonderful by clear weather,  ships in rows, and islands far. And I could see the Incheon bridge and Yeongjong bridge through telescope. I spent three and a half hours there. Citizens or tourists came to see the scenery from time to time. The old man in wheelchair was one of them and showed interest in drawing and told that he was learning literary paintings, kinds of oriental style painting.  He was there reading newspaper for an hour and left saying 'bye' to me just after I drew him.

some buildings around Gwanhun-dong, Jongno-gu

Gwanhun-dong (관훈동) is known as a gateway to the Insadong-gil, the largest market for antiques and artworks in Korea. The area is bordered by Anguk-dong(안국동) and Songhyeon-dong(송현동)to the north, Gyeongun-dong(경운동)to the east, and Insa-dong(인사동) to the south, and Gyeonji-dong (견지동) to the west. There are numbers of galleries standing closely together like Insa-dong. I sketched some small galleries and other buildings on my way to Insa-dong occasionally.

Ara Art Center(아라아트센터), pen and watercolor,

Baegak Art Space(백악미술관), pencil and watercolor,

a building construction site near the galleries, pen and watercolor,

Bon Gallery(본 갤러리) at Gyeonji-dong, brush pen and watercolor,

Seoul Jungang Church(제7일안식교 서울중앙교회), pen and watercolor,
.
( 14.8 x 21cm sketchbook )
.

sketch at Unhyeongung, pen, watercolor, 12 x 16 cm
I sketched this one sitting on the wooden floor under warm sunlight. I felt as if I were living there.

Seoul has lots of treasure as subjects for sketchers. And sketchers can bring them on small paper by a moment's attention with affection.

USk 2014 PARATY Symposium

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE]
Nov. 23, 2013

Call for Submissions for Symposium Programming

We have a city: Paraty, Brazil. We have dates: August 27-30, 2014. Now it’s time to create programming for the 5th International Urban Sketching Symposium! To do that we need YOU, urban sketchers of the world, to submit proposals for workshops and extra activities before December 20, 2013.

Teach a Sketching Workshop
These are the workshops that have been a mainstay of past Symposiums. You can see some samples here.

In previous years we offered 3-hour workshops in the morning and the afternoon. This year we are tentatively planning for 3.5-hour workshops during the morning only, with other programming in the afternoons.

Selected proposals will be announced in January.

Compensation: If your proposal is selected, the Symposium organization pays for airfare and five nights of accommodation. Local instructors who will not need to travel will receive an honorarium.

In addition to the workshops, we are planning to offer a diversity of other programming in Paraty. What could you propose? Here are some ideas:

Lead a Sketchcrawl
Organize a "follow me" sketchcrawl in Paraty. People will draw where you lead them and rely on you for tips to become better urban sketchers. This is your opportunity to earn some cred and promote your work! We are looking for sketchers with previous experience organizing sketchcrawls.

Give a Lecture
Enlighten participants with a sketching-related talk. Whether it is about your own sketching, or the findings of your research on 19th century artists reporters, we want to learn from you!

Do a Demonstration
Show us how you do your magic! What can you show other sketchers that will inspire us while promoting your work?

Surprise Us With Something We Haven’t Thought Of!
Do you have another activity idea that can take place over a few afternoon hours? Yoga for sketchers? How to find the best fire hydrants for sketching? Tell us how you can catch the sketchers’ attention and passion with something different from a workshop.

Compensation: If you are selected for an extra activity as mentioned above, you will receive free registration for the Symposium.

Some details to keep in mind while designing your proposal:
  • We recommend you to get to know Paraty’s possible workshop locations before you create your proposal, in order to match your workshop theme with the city’s environment. Click here to view photos of the locations posted in our Facebook page.
  • You can propose a workshop for a general location or for a specific spot.
  • You should keep in mind that workshop locations are subject to change and the Workshop committee reserves the right to make the best arrangements / combinations of workshops and locations.
  • Keep in mind the weather: "Dry season (May through September) - The average temperature in Paraty during these months ranges between 17 and 25 °C (62.6-77 °F). We recommend bringing a light sweater for the evenings and chilly nights, as well as sunglasses, a cap or hat, and shorts for the hot days."

HOW TO SUBMIT PROPOSALS

All proposals must be emailed to symposium@urbansketchers.org.
If you are proposing a workshop, you must use this form and include sample sketches..

DEADLINE

All proposals are due by Friday, December 20, 2013 (11:59 p.m. EST)

merchants in street near Inwang market, Hongje-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul

a female merchant selling vegetable, seen from Mcdonalds, Hongje-dong,
pen and watercolor, 13 x 18 cm

merchant on street near Inwang market, Hongje-dong
colored paper, pencil, pastels, 19 x 25 cm

Around Yujin shopping mall a big traditional market Inwang Market has been formed with various kinds of mongers around it. I feel like to sketch the merchants on streets when I pass them who live hardly and sincerely.
