The weather was extremely fine! Though the Gyeonggi English Village locates at Paju city which takes over one hour to arrive at from Seoul, eight sketchers participated in. The village was far better than I expected in scale, quiet atmosphere, and beautiful buildings in rows. The village was established for the purpose of experiencing to speak English or else as living in English using countries by Gyeonggi province on April, 2003. There are various kinds of programs for kids, students, or businessmen, etc.

We enjoyed all the beautiful scenery and spring season sketching here and there.

restaurant sketch at Jongno

Today I could pass the Jongno police station at Gyeongun-dong, Jongno. Next to the police station I saw a black restaurant building which I didn't see before. I entered the garden where I found a swing bench in the corner. I appreciated the building on swinging bench in sunny afternoon. The small fountain contrasted with the black wall  made me to draw the facade of the restaurant. The right white building is a police building. Pink and green color looked good. The font type of signboard words looked good to me. After I finished the sketch the staff came out and stopped the fountain, so I asked him to run once more for me to take a photo. He did it gladly, for which I thanked him too. He told me he didn't know that I was drawing and he let me know that the restaurant opened last November. Though the colors are pretty in overall black building, I didn't use them for I wanted to leave it as black and white drawing.

오늘 경운동의 종로 경찰서 옆에 있는 검은색 레스토랑 건물을 처음 보았어요. 작년 11월에 열은 이탈리안 음식점이더군요. 마당이 좋아서 들어가서 건물을 감상하다가 검은 빌딩에 대비되어 반짝이며 움직이는 분수의 물방울이 예뻐서 한장 그려야지 하고 시작했어요.

연필로만 그리는 것이 쉬운것이 아니더군요. 수채같으면 면으로 칠해버리면 간단한데 일일이 연필선을 긋는 것이 쉽지만은 않았구요. 그래도 오랫만에 한장 그리고 나니 기분이 좋았어요. 긴 겨울 기침으로 밖에서 못그리다가 따스한 햇살쬐면서 한장 했습니다.

I usually sketch the various buildings on the street by chance when I feel good composition of the adjacent buildings matching together. Especially old downtown in redevelopment, there are lots of old-fashioned buildings and modern buildings coexist irregularly but harmoniously with each other. Whenever sketching buildings by the roadside, I used to be absorbed in a lively scenery with the noise of the busy street.  

These works are recently sketched on the street here and there in my spare time.

익숙한 거리를 지날 때마다 수많은 빌딩들의 다양한 표정들이 흥미롭습니다.

개개의 건물보다도 서로 어우러지며 섞이는 장면들은 새로운 컴포지션을 끌어 냅니다.

길을 걷다가, 혹은 약속 시간을 기다리다가 인상적으로 다가오는 장면들을 만나면서

도시라는 무한 주제에서 순간순간 아름다움을 스케치로 채워가는 시간이 즐겁습니다.

Yesterday I went to Seorak mountain(1708 m) located at Gangwon province with my family. The white diagonal lines shown in left are for cable car which runs 1,128 m from the entrance(222 m altitude) to Gwongeumseong(699 m altitude). I rode with my family and others; it carries 50 passengers at one time. Instead of climbing I stayed at the temple(Sinheungsa) and sketched the above one. I remember over thirty years had passed since I'd gone there. The roads or convenience facillities seem to be changed in better way for tourists. But the beautiful scenery of the mountain was the same as before. I would like to go there often.

어제 모처럼 가족과 설악산에 다녀왔어요. 가족들은 울산바위까지 올르고 저는 신흥사 주변을 구경하며 스케치도 좀 했습니다. 산은 여전히 아름다왔어요. 울산바위까지 엄첨 힘들었다고 하더군요. 오늘 길에 속초 중앙시장도 둘러 보았어요. 고속 버스가 2시간 반정도밖에 안걸려서 당일로 다녀오기에 충분했다는 것도 새로운 발견이었습니다. 아름다운 우리의 산하를 많이 그려보아야겠다는 각오도 한 여행이었습니다.

I sketched the above ones last January. Stuffs are not in order always.

They are not in order. But the features look natural and inspire me to dare to sketch.

아무래도 겨울이라 밖에서 그리는 것보다는 실내가 좋습니다.

막무가내로 나다니다가 감기 기침으로 고생많았어요.

지난 1월에 그린 책상위 풍경 그림을 올립니다.

건강한 몸으로 밖에서 그리고 싶습니다.

건강히 지내시기 바랍니다.

Chattering with friends

3월의 햇살은 따뜻하고 밝아도 바깥온도는 아직 낮아서 카페에서 친구들을 만났습니다.

지금은 스마트 시대 임이 분명하네요.

수다중에도 궁금한 내용은 바로 검색해서 풀고 또 이야기를 나누었습니다.

친구와의 수다는 즐겁고 행복합니다.

광진구 어린이대공원 식물원.
예전에 유병화샘과 함께 자주 다녔던 스케치 장소죠.
매력적인 장소입니다.

식물원에 있는 야자나무, 바나나나무 등의 열대식물은 1972년에 베트남 참전용사들이 해군함대에 실어와서 어린이대공원에 기증한 거라고 합니다. 그 옛날 어린 식물들의 해군함대 여행을 상상해 봅니다.

요즘 우리집 화분에 있는 식물들이 꽃도 잘 피우고 쑥쑥 자랍니다.
보고있으면 흐뭇합니다.

집안의 모습을 이것 저것 그려봅니다.
어느 쪽을 봐도 정리 안 된 모습이 저 자신을 보는 것 같습니다.

날씨가 쌀쌀할 때는 쇼핑, 식사, 영화관람까지 한 곳에서 모두 해결할 수 있는 백화점이 최고인 것 같습니다.
카페테리아에서 식사하고 바로 옆에서 커피나 차를 마실 수 있어서 편리합니다.
평일 점심시간이 지난 3시쯤 가면 한가롭게 지낼 수 있습니다.
신제품이 내 마음을 흔들지만 보는 것만으로도 행복했습니다.

The area around Jongno-3ga(종로3가) is the origin of many famous film theatres, and a large number of shops and jewelry stores along the street near Jongmyo(Royal Shrine). In spite of the old downtown in central Seoul, redevelopment and reconstruction projects of this area are highly restricted now. So this area contains some interesting attractions from diverse cultures of historic Seoul between old and new buildings. 

I enjoyed sketching the various scenes from the buildingscapes along the street around Jongno-3ga.

Yesterday I visited the Hwagyesa (temple) located in Suyu 1-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. The temple was built on 1522 in Joseon dynasty. It's loved by people for its long history and the easy accessibility. I could arrive there by 15 minutes' walk from bus stop. And buildings for educational purposes of buddhism located near the entrance. Lots of monks come and go. I imagines how beautiful it would look in the other seasons. It would be one of my favorite sketching places, maybe.

어제 수유동에 있는 화계사를 가보았어요. 서울에 있으면서도 처음으로 가 본 절입니다. 절의 모습은 상상 밖으로 아름다왔어요. 앞의 커다란 삼층 빌딩은 전통 건축물같지 않았지만 뒤켠에 조용히 숨어 있는 건물들은 좋았습니다. 날씨는 비록 쌀쌀했지만 햇살을 받으면 두장 그렸습니다.

I go often to Insa-dong, Jongno, where lots of galleries locate at. On the way coming home I could pass the junction and see the doughnut store with big pane glass. I'd like to go inside and capture the outdoor scene. In the corner a couple was selling roasted chestnuts. People look beautiful when they live with their best. After finishing the first one I moved to the table near the entrance. I tried to draw the big building, Jongno Tower which was so hard to draw well. This time was same to me too. 

며칠 전 인사동 나갔다가 집에 오는 길에 길 모퉁이를 지나면서 도넛 가게를 보았어요. 그 안에 들어가면 춥지도 않겠거니와 밖의 풍경도 잘 보일 것같았어요. 도넛 두개를 사서 자리를 잡고 두장 그렸어요. 군밤파는 부부의 모습이 커다란 빌딩보다도 더 마음에 남습니다.

The National Museum of Korea is located about 1.5 km away from Yongsan Station. It is the largest museum in Korea and houses precious Korean cultural assets that tell the story of Korea’s fascinating history, from ancient times to the modern era. The architectural style harmoniously blends traditional and contemporary styles. It was built to house more than 140,000 national relics and artifacts, and also to serve as a complex cultural facility with a sculpture garden, open plaza and outdoor exhibition area. Also, artificial falls, streams, and green fields have been cultivated to create a beautifully landscaped space for visitors.

Last Saturday, in celebration of the 46th World Wide SketchCrawl, we Seoul usk members met at this magnificent museum and had a good sketch time.There were so many sketching objects that I couldn't help drawing busily in and out of the museum despite the cold wind. Nevertheless, it was informative and very interesting work to me.
